Emergency Cell System Malfunction
I got this message 3 or four times in my AM commute. The 30 second reboot seemed to clear it for the remainder of the morning drive.
I searched but could not locate a previous thread so perhaps someone knows where this post should best be located.

I had the issue and had to get the telematics unit replaced. Apparently it was corroded.what the? Fast forward 3 days later after a couple of days of rain and the malfunction came back but then 2 days later it cleared itself. Note the first time it never cleared. I hope it doesn't come back again but I have my doubts...perhaps there is a water leak..let's see what happens on the next rainy day..fingers crossed

By water leak, do you mean from the vehicle itself or only when you are driving in heavy rain?

Messy weather coming up the next 2 days with some rain. I'm not going to park it in the garage and let it soak outside and see if anything comes up. Stay tuned..

Well guess what, just as I predicted the error is back! And it's water related.
There is definitely a leak and given the location of the unit being in the headliner directly connected to the sharkfin, water must be seeping in through there.[IMG][/IMG] I'll take it to service on Monday morning..ugghh

I got .35 this week but now have constant notifications of this malfunction. Disappointed the dealer did not test before releasing the vehicle because it showed up less than one mile from driving off the lot.

Water leak through the sharkfin!
I have to wait 2 weeks for the replacement parts to come in from Germany. In the meantime, no communications are working! No GPS, no data..hell, I can't even make phone calls through the car because the cellular repeater antenna is shot! I guess this is evidence that the car does indeed have a cellular repeater and is used.

Anyone have news about this issue?
My car went back to the dealer yesterday as I have 3 weeks of driving on the open road next month. However, their initial report was not encouraging. I gave them snippets of this thread but not certain they are listening.

I did a test drive with the service manager late this afternoon and this issue did not show up. It was consistent up until the morning I took it to the dealer so I am clueless about what happened. In the meantime, my weather widget has not required the iDrive reboot.
I have a photo of the error message but apparently need video if this shows up again. Edited to say that when I returned to the car in the garage to configure my new Uniden R7, the error message came back. So why would a radar detector make a difference?

The dealer is going at this one more time since a BMW Master Mechanic suggested opening a Puma case. However, the service manager thinks BMW will not accept responsibility because of my radar detectors (V1 hardwired + R7) and (BV 900s) camcorder.
At one point today while the error message stayed on, I activated BMW Assist and it worked with no problems but they warned the car might issue a false positive and send police to me because of an IT malfunction.

I finally got the dealer to open a PUMA case and BMW responded saying to replace the telematics unit.
I hope the next chapter will not be as dismal as bichoo story.

When I called today, I was told BMW's last PUMA response today was 12:30 pm CST.
However, my dealer needs an IRRAP session to program the new telematics unit since the dealer does not know how to do this. So tomorrow will be day 4 and I leave home in one week.

What's going on? Did they find the cause of the problem? Replacing the telematics unit is the solution but what caused it? I hope it's not a water leak like I had. I don't know if its too late or not but you can ask them to test it or better yet, was there any corrosion present on the unit? If so, that's a sign of moisture getting in.

I talked to him moments ago, and he was also talking to the tech who said there was no corrosion on the previous TCB. Their main cue for this third time at the dealer this month were some error codes. Where they got hung up with the PUMA case was that the new TCB has a different part number. So the local dealer tech had to send photos of both TCBs to make certain all was okay. At this point, they expect to program the new TCB and test it this morning. I told them that if the error continued during these tests that a BMW NA 'master mechanic' suggested reinstalling .35 software since things got worse after that install.

I drove to the dealer as the frustration is building after three visits this month and now the 4th day this week.
The service manager told me that BMW cannot communicate with the new TCB and they want them to check my wiring. I said no, I do not want my car taken apart chasing a issue that did not exist. I cannot get my car until tomorrow and it will likely be with the telematics unit that came with the car.

I am hoping this is the final chapter, but just picked up my car and the error message did not show up on the drive home from the dealer.
The service manager said that the 'new' TCB they put in was actually older than the one in my car. I told them to stop checking the wiring and BMW then forced them to overnight a newer TCB. Once the 'newer' TCB came in there were no problems with programming and for now the error message does not seem to be a problem.
