X5M reliability and comfort

Hello guys. I've been a forum member on here for some quite some time when I went through the ordering process for my G80 M3. However, I have never been on this section of the forum. I'm in the market looking at X5M. A couple of things I have questions in regards. How reliable has the X5M for you guys and how comfortable is the ride? This is a vehicle I plan to do a lot of road trips with my family. So I want the sport engine but i want my family to be comfortable. I've also considered the RS6, even though they're completely different vehicles. The price of them are fairly similar and so is the practicality. Obviously would like to keep in the M family especially since I'm more fond the interior of the BMWs.

I wouldn't mind buying a one year old use one either. Any huge benefits in buying the LCI model over the pre-LCI model?

Thank you for any inputs.

Comfort: it's not as harsh as the X3/4M and not as comfortable as any None M air suspension X5...somewhere in between

I sent you a PM

Had a 22 M3. Currently have a 23 X3M and 24 X5M. Like them all but the X5M is the easy winner for road trips. Very comfortable ride compared to the other two.

I would say test drive the X5MC and the X5 M60i to really get a feel on what you're really looking for considering you want this for a family. The X5 M60i has the air suspension option.

No huge benefit going with the LCI imo. Visually there are pros and cons to both and the changes are minor. I recently added the replica lci tailights to my pre lci so to me I have the best of both worlds. You can save a significant amount of money by going with a clean pre lci model like a lot of people have done recently.

X5M is stiff when you compare it to other suvs but not nearly as rough as a M3 or X3M. I use to live in NY and I take my family on road trips all the time without issues. It does feel overly stiff when i'm driving on the pos road on the manhatten bridge but its fine when i'm out of the tri-state area.

Highly recommend you test drive this one to make sure its what you are looking for.

this article will answer the reliability issue:

I have seen other articles that show the same results.

Yeah, the first one is useless since it's an X5, but the second link you have to search around to get the X5M review. He could have just posted this in the first place.

I am coming from a 2019 X3 M40i and there's no turning back, nor regrets.

Consider an X7 M60. It has an air suspension and is pretty fast. Won't be as nimble or tight as X5M but will be a lot more comfortable on family trips.

For a family I would recommend the X5 M60 with the M Professional Adaptive Suspension, as OP is comming from a G80. He will not like the air suspension, as anti-roll bars are preferred (standard on the X5M). The X5M seats are firmer due to the higher density foam used in the seats compared to the X5 M60 seats which are “plusher” due to a lighter density foam– this is from personal experience, as I just changed from a X5M to a X5 M60, and I can tell a difference compared to when I drive my G83 non-bucket back to back. Test driving a X5 M60 will be a challenge with either the M Professional Adaptive Suspension or air suspension, as dealerships will not order these options for floor stock.

This!!

I have a 24 X5MC and while it is an awesome vehicle, I do wish I would have looked at the M60i closer. We have two young kids it is not the most comfortable ride, especially for long trips. Unless you need track-level performance and handling, the M60i gives you 75% of the performance of the X5M without sacrificing comfort. It has a much better ride as you can option it with air suspension. Not to mention you will save 30 grand over the X5M which basically has the same engine with a higher tune.

I managed to own a 2021 x3mc for almost 3 years.
Loved the car but very hard riding.
Traded that in for a 2024 M60i. Very, very good riding and handling for a family type car. It has Springs but I looked under to make sure. Rear steering makes so easy going around corners. About the best road car I have ever had.
But I missed the Red Selectors on the steering wheel.
So I traded that for a 2024 Black X5M.
Now a X5 M Compitition is a M Compitition car. It is a much better that the X3MC riding. Very nice. But still.
Somewhat firmer that the M60i. Which went over railroad tracks as if they were not there.
If you are looking for long road family trips type the x5 60i is the way to go.
But I am 80 and I figured one more M Compition. I couldn’t help myself.
It rides pretty good, very quiet. Has no frills like rear steering.
It is not at all like the M60i. Very buttoned down. Heavier feeling. Steady as a rock.
And if a car company wants to give you driving choices putting the selectors on the console is very distracting I found.

My wife and I recently switched out our 2020 M50 and 2021 X5M for the 2024 M60 and 2024 X5M.

Regarding the LCI differences? I originally thought it was minor, but they drive with completely upgraded personalities. The LCI X5M feels far more spirited, and the tech is far more advanced in the cockpit.

There's plenty of subjective aspects, but I personally think the LCI is a huge uplift for this platform.

Reliability. Weeeeellll, generally speaking we've had nothing but good experiences with our recent X5s (3 total, 2019 included). Unfortunately my 2024 X5M is in the shop with a bad fuel injector. Both the injector and fuel rail need to be replaced and it's been a 3-week wait.

This is literally my only issue. I'm not sure if this says anything about the LCI, but I would think my situation is the exception.

Our M60 has the air suspension and every time I drive it, I feel like I have VIP seating at the "Highway Show". Super quiet...I can hear myself think.

X5M while more spirited and put together feels a bit synthetic. I'm okay with this, I mean, it's a really sporty SAV, not a Ferrari. It exceeds my expectations here.

Honestly, the M60 is fast enough. It "F-ing" moves like the M50 could not. I completely understand why folks opt for the M60 over the X5M if they get one choice. That said, the X5M still comes out on top regarding handling, raw speed, and aggressiveness.

Long trips? The M60 all day long, won't even think twice unless I'm rolling out by myself to a car show.

You can't go wrong with either choice as long as you understand and accept the value each brings.

Had the exact same problem with my F90 / M5...ended up replacing all 4 injectors on side of the block. Unfortunately, BMW only approved 1 injectors even though the tech indicated to BMW that the others would fail thereafter. Sure enough, she had to go back to replace the other 3...might a common issue with this engine

Curious what were the symptoms that prompted you to bring the car in?

Vivid! Car started rattling aggressively upon starting up. The engine must have been so out of balance that it rocked on the bushings aggressively...

BTW, my car had no AC either...I lived in CA at the time and bought it in January. I never turned the AC on until about April on a drive to Palm Springs only to find out I have no AC in this car...she sat at the shop for a very long time as this diagnosis took forever as many different parts were replaced...

I had the AC Compressor issue 1 week after buying my car right off the showroom floor. BMW had alot of bad AC compressors during that time that only impacted their V8 cars. I drove around in the middle of July/August in a brand new BMW without AC. BMW did compensate me for it so i wasn't too bitter.

Yup...I wish they knew the compressor was faulty at the beginning. They replaced many likely perfectly functioning new parts until they realized the compressor was the issue...

They compensated me as well with no issues at all. One phone call and the check was in the mail.

Thank you guys for the very detail feedbacks. I think i will have to give the X5 M60 a try. I was reluctant because coming from an M car, I want remain in another true M car. I was also a little hesitant due to the looks of M60 as well. The X5M competition just looks menacing and I simply love the stance of it. However, I’ll definitely give the M60 a try considering it’s much cheaper and the comofort you all have describe.
