This brawling SUV will drop-kick you to the horizon at a moment's notice, yet it still has a softer side.

This is still the most concerning aspect for me as it hopefully won't translate to future M cars. "but it is genuinely uncomfortable over long stretches. And that's when driving in the most-comfortable "Road" mode."

I immediately ruled out the X3 M as a possible next car because of its harsh ride, which I don't find acceptable for an SUV no matter how much horsepower or what badging it has. BMW doesn't seem to be getting the ride and handling balance right lately, hopefully the next M3/4 won't suffer because of it as well.

I agree, I've read many reviews that complain about the ride quality. I'll find out for myself next month when my X5M arrives.

So everyone that is talking about, or reading reviews about X5M "stiff ride".

My last two cars over the past 20 years have been E46 M3, and E90 M3 ZCP.

I haven't yet driven the X5M, but coming from previous stiff suspension M models, would I really notice anything different that my previous and current M3 ZCP?

Just wondering if "ride quality" complaints are from people who haven't had a stiff suspension high performance car in the past, like an M3/M4/M5.

I do not think it's stiff.

I don't think it's too stiff either. I think my F95 feels smoother than my F85 did.

I had a 2010 M3 coupe (no comp pkg. that year) and I think my 2021 X5MC rides better than that car. I won the tire lottery by getting the Michelins instead of the Pirellis, but I doubt that would make a difference in ride quality. But who knows?

I watched his F96 X6M review and I had to click the back button after 4 mins :

Here is an interesting one - fully loaded x5 m50 vs x5m comp
https://tflcar.com/2020/08/2020-bmw-...i-x5-m-review/

I go through that very debate in my head often since my lease expires in several months
More points in my book are :
M50 has a trailer hitch - big one for me
It does know how to relax in comfort mode and has more relaxed seats
Handling is decent especially with DHP - But the only way to get roll stabilization in dhp is to get active steering - Which i dislike

X5m on the other hand has great handling and driving dynamics with all the right packages.
Concerns-
Lack of trailer hitch
Under front bumper oil cooler that needs to be covered for pebble protection
Does not know how to relax - potential complaints from family on long rides

I couldn't agree more with this review. Power alone they are very similar but it pretty much ends there. The X5M feels as stiff as my F80 was on rough roads. It always feels like its ready to play 24/7 which is a good and bad thing. My honest opinion if they offered the X5M with M air suspension it would be the PERFECT suv. If Porsche could do it no reason why M couldn't.
