WardsAuto Names Wards 10 Best Interiors for 2020
WardsAuto has unveiled the annual Wards 10 Best Interiors list for 2020, spotlighting vehicles with stylish and comfortable interiors across a wide range of price points.

Now in its tenth year, the Wards 10 Best Interiors list recognizes outstanding achievement in aesthetics, comfort, ergonomics, materials usage, fit-and-finish and user-friendliness of displays and controls. Wards editors selected the best interiors from a list of 32 nominated vehicles with all-new or significantly redesigned cabins available in the U.S. There is no price cap for 10 Best Interiors, but value is a factor.

Due to COVID-19, it was awfully hard to pick this year’s Wards 10 Best Interiors winners when members of the editorial team were unable to climb in and out of cars, fiddle with the knobs, try out the seats, touch the materials and get close enough to make educated assessments about fit & finish.

With the testing process going virtual, each vehicle delivered was evaluated in person by one editor. Using our Microsoft Teams communication portal, that editor used their phone to shoot live video inside the vehicle while discussing features relevant to our judging criteria.

“In past years, the cars went to our office and we all got seat time and we did our scoring and could talk about this feature or that,” says Wards Senior Content Director Drew Winter. “This year, in quarantine, we didn’t pass cars around for fear of spreading the virus. But we managed to do the judging just the same, with the help of video cameras on our phones.”

Meanwhile, the seven other editorial judges were watching on their laptops from home, able to hear the commentary and ask questions along the way and sample the interior’s features remotely via the hands of the moderator.

SUVs and CUVs make up seven of the 10 honorees – the first time so many utility vehicles have dominated – leaving only two sedans and a coupe to fill out this year’s list.

The 2020 winners in alphabetical order (price listed as tested):

Audi e-tron ($85,790)
Bentley Flying Spur ($283,275)
BMW X6 M Competition ($131,745)
Chevy Corvette Stingray ($78,820)
Hyundai Venue ($23,305)
Kia Telluride ($47,255)
Lincoln Aviator ($81,790)
Mercedes-Benz GLB ($57,470)
Nissan Sentra ($24,800)
Toyota Highlander ($51,654)

This year’s trendlines are unmistakable. Redesigned vehicles are arriving with more heated second-row seats, more reconfigurable digital displays, more compelling color and fabric combinations, more use of bold ambient lighting colors and more front passenger seats available with memory position settings.

During the 10 years of the competition, Hyundai has won eight trophies, more than any other brand, while its sister brand Kia has won six. This is the fifth year both Hyundai and Kia have earned trophies in the same year. Chevrolet has won seven trophies.

It’s also the fourth year in a row Lincoln has made the cut and the third year in a row for Toyota. Nissan now has five trophies. Among German luxury rivals, BMW and Mercedes-Benz each has five trophies, while Audi has four.

The 2020 Wards 10 Best Interiors will be honored in an all new, one year only, special virtual ceremony during the Informa Tech Automotive Group’s Super Event featuring the WardsAuto Interiors Conference, WardsAuto User Experience Conference, TU-Detroit and ADAS & Autonomous Vehicles August 18-20. For more information about the virtual conference, visit https://wardsauto.informa.com/interiors/.

Winner: BMW X6 M Perfect Blend of Performance, Luxury, Art
The X6 M succeeds in driving home the SUV’s performance DNA message while ensuring those along for the ride are well taken care of. And there is plenty of artistry, too, with tremendous attention to detail.

With the X6 M, BMW whips up the perfect recipe, blending sport and luxury with a generous dash of artistry. The result is a gorgeous, functional mix that earns the SUV a 2020 Wards 10 Best Interiors award.
Of course, M stands for Bavarian performance, and the X6’s driver-focused cockpit offers plenty of reminders, including the bright red starter button mounted on the center console and customizable M1 and M2 selectors along the steering wheel that enable the driver to quickly snap the vehicle into more dynamic driving modes. Red and blue M-brand stitching adorns the steering wheel and pistol-grip gearshift and runs along the outer edge of the seatbelts.
The X6 M Competition’s form-fitting seats further drive home the point, with a bold racing stripe down the center and special X6 M badging embedded into their beefy integrated headrests. Completing the theme is the digital instrumentation, with its dramatic kidney-shaped combo tach and speedometer, and a dynamically rising center console that envelops the driver.
“What an incredible design statement by the M division,” notes juror James Amend. “The front seats, which look like something out of Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter, send the message this is one seriously sporty SUV.”
But a vehicle that stickers north of $130,000 also needs a high dose of luxury – and the X6 M delivers here, too. For starters, it turns out those great-looking seats also are quite comfortable no matter where you’re sitting. Front seats include full massage features and there’s extra lumbar support for the driver. Four of the five seating positions are heated, and a four-zone climate-control system ensures each passenger’s comfort.

There isn’t an ounce or inch of faux here. All materials are genuine, from the quilted Merino leather that covers the seats, instrument panel and doors to Alcantara headliner and the metallic and carbon-fiber trim throughout. Multicolored accent lighting, including backlit speaker grilles for the Bowers and Wilkins sound system, seals the deal. Our test vehicle also came with the optional Executive Package that includes rear window shades and heated and cooled cupholders.

Beyond all that, it’s the X6 M’s overall design aesthetic that simply takes your breath away. Its two-toned cockpit, highlighted by its stunning pale gray Silverstone leather, appears as if meticulously carved from an iceberg. There are so many interesting lines and so much attention to detail here, including the sculpted inner door panels both front and back, the precise accent stitching found in unexpected places and the carbon fiber that bends and flows ever so smoothly along the instrument panel.

This artwork is supplemented by arguably the best man-machine interface on the planet. The X6 M’s seventh-generation iDrive is mated to a 12.3-in. (31-cm) configurable display screen that can be controlled in multiple ways, including hand gestures, steering-wheel buttons, direct touch or the console-mounted rotary dial.
Voice controls are spot on. Telling the system your back hurts will activate the massaging feature, and mentioning you’re cold will raise the cabin temperature and turn on the heated seats. There’s also an M-exclusive head-up display that includes tachometer readouts.

“The X6 M’s exciting and racy interior almost feels as though it’s been lifted from a concept car,” sums up judge Bob Gritzinger. “But it’s real, and available for purchase by those few BMW buyers looking for the ultimate interior to match their ultimate driving machine.”

They are immediately discredited when you have BMW and Kia, Hyundai, Toyota or Nissan Sentra on the same list.

Unless it's a list of "cars with 4 wheels made in 2020".

I can definitely agree with this one, the X5/6/7 simply have BMW's best interior at the moment. The new design looks great and finally modern (a critique of past Bimmers), the new trim choices and glass controls look great, materials are simply top of their classes, and the new color choices such as the Ivory White/Night Blue really make them look even more special. The only area of improvement is of course the dreaded gauge cluster, but otherwise excellent interiors.

Reading comprehension isn't your forte.

"There is no price cap for 10 Best Interiors, but value is a factor."

" Wards editors selected the best interiors from a list of 32 nominated vehicles with all-new or significantly redesigned cabins available in the U.S."

So to sum up, they are looking across price ranges.

I'm pretty sure they're talking about the f96 x6m interior. but why are they showing the f86 x6m interior? TBH I think I would still take the f86 over the f96

They are talking about the F96, and use the correct photos on their web site...looks like the OP just used the wrong image here

I'm not poo-pooing the X6, which is beautiful, but I've been in every modern BMW now and every G car feels the same inside to me. In other words, aside from trim and leather options, if you award one, why not award them all?

This is one of the biggest problems with G platform imo. Kinda shitty your interior is 95% identical to a 330i when you buy an M8 right?

Right? I remember getting in a G30 when they first came out and I thought it was great. Then I got an X3 loaner, then a 330. Drove an M5...all the same.

But then I suppose it's always been like this.

Even with the new 228i. Pick the right option, and the interior of a 30k car looks the same as that of 150k car.

Finally a review that truly, really, genuinely appreciates the I-drive. It is head and shoulders above anything I have tried. Maybe it is my familiarity but I really do believe it is the best in the marketplace.

I'm going to disregard the rough Kia/Hyundai pictures above and enjoy the praise. The X5M/X6M interiors are fantastic. BMW finally giving more attention to detail to seat stitching has put them on exactly where they should be.

Agreed. Those KIA/Hyundai interiors look low rent at worst and copies of you know who at best.
