I'm installing iOS 14 beta right now. Not expecting any magic, but I'll see if it does anything at all.

Looks like Apple is also going to "enable" the feature for IOS 13.6, not just IOS 14, according to this video;
Apple unlocks the 2021 BMW 5 Series with an iPhone (Full Car Play reveal) They also mention the U1 features and that it will be coming later as they work out the details with other manufacturers. So it looks like it won't be required initially. After seeing what BMW did with Drive Recorder for older model years. I suspect they will do the same for CarKey. In other words, if you have an older model you will have to purchase the option or perhaps even subscribe like the current DigitalKey for Android phones.

I'm dying to understand the reason that only cars manufactured after 7/20 would support this. It would seem to me if your car supports the digital key card today, it should support this. Fingers crossed, but certainly not holding my breath.

Because BMW is greedy...it’s the same reason they tried to charge for CarPlay. It takes a community to call them out on their BS...there’s no reason 7/20 and later other than being stingy.

I suspect its more likely an issue of Apple requiring specific hardware in the vehicle for the feature it to function. This is reminiscent of many other Apple technologies Homekit, Airplay2, Carplay etc etc that hardware makers have had to contend with. If BMW could roll this out retroactively, even if they charged for it, it would be in their best interest to do so.

RE: Hardware, I'm not sure. Only the latest phones have the ultra wideband chip (UWB), which is what's required for the convenience of leaving it in your pocket because UWB can do precise location tracking. The other supported phones, XR, XS etc. don't have that. If it required specific hardware, the XR XS etc. should not be supported, but they are. They just (in theory) will require you to have it in your hand, place it on the charger to start, etc. It is possible there is additional hardware within the NFC reader for MY21, but again, if a MY21 supports an iPhone XR, which cannot use the UWB, why can't a MY20?

The CarKey functionality they announced today is "basic" nfc that the existing android carkey functionality also uses, so you need to have your iphone <= 1.5 inch away from the door handle. |

When it says it's applicable to cars produced 'from July 2020', does this mean when the car is finished with production? Or when it entered production (or when you placed the order)? My car entered production a few days ago (June) but should be finished early July..

What exactly is meant by “coding?” Isn’t coding nothing more than software and therefore possible to update?

Meaning that our cars do not currently have those options available to enable, it’s essentially missing from the car’s OS (so to speak). We would have to have the dealer install the latest I-step version to bring it up to the code used in MY2021 cars, then code the features on. This assumes there isn’t actually a hardware change and that there will be an applicable update to the car.

Don't forget this is an existing subscription model that exists for physical digital keys and android, and is merely now being extended to include an additional vendor. Once the the iPhone and car can talk to each other, the service should work the same as the other digital keys. |

If I had time to find the threads, there was a lively debate early in 2019 about when we could go from using our iPhone to our iW.
