General Snow Grabber - good winter tire?
Hi all,
Anybody on here running General Snow Grabber winter tires? It's going to be my first winter with the X6 this year and I'm researching tire options (cheaper to buy them now than when the winter season starts). I've never ran General tires in any of my cars as I've always thought they fall in the "budget tires" bracket which I always try to avoid but I've recently come across a winter wheel/tire package straight from BMW that comes with General tires. Moreover, they're more than twice cheaper than the Pirelli Scorpion for example. Not many reviews online but the little I have found say it's a great tire, especially for the money. So share your thoughts if you've ran General winter tires. TIA! |

They're well known in the off road scene as among the most durable. I wouldn't have any reservations.

I run General Tyres AT3 for the winter. They are a designated mud and snow tyre so a bit more versatile than the snow grabbers. Can also be used all year although I only use them for the winter, but because the compound can be used all year there is not such a rush to get them off as soon as it turns warmer. I use the 275/45/20. If your in a real winter country, then the snow grabbers will probably be the best option but for just some snow now and again the AT3 are really good.

+1 on the General AT3s, they were great on the PDC off-road course. It was pouring down rain all day and they were excellent all around tires. AT3s were also on all the X5s for launch off-road press event.
Here was my trusty test X5 at Spartanburg PDC.

I haven't tried using the winter tires you've mentioned but I'll be sure to look into it. I've used a set of Pirelli Winter Cinturato that I bought from 4WheelOnline and I'm satisfied with its control and traction. I also have a stock of Nitto tires NT-SN2 winter tires that I used in 2018; very dependable especially during snowfall.

I know this is an old thread, but I am looking into getting the General Grabber AT3 for the winter. However, we dont have that much snow here and the car will mostly be driven on dry or wet roads. Anyone got experience on how they handle on dry and wet?
Thanks |

The General Grabber AT3 is both M+S and Three Peaks serve Service rated, so I think it would do pretty well in snow and cold wet conditions. It does seem to ride pretty quite as well from what people say. It is a good 90% on-road, 10% off-road tire. I have thought about getting it as an alternative to the summer tires for off-roading and snow.

The Grabber AT3 will perform worse than a standard “all-season” tire in most winter conditions.
Unless you’re going to use them on light trails or on a lot of dirt roads, you’d probably be better off with a tire like the Michelin Crossclimate 2, or even the OE all seasons. If you’re dealing with snow and ice, a Real winter tire is a game changer. |
