2019 50i w/ 70k Miles: Would you do it?
Hi everyone,
I've been looking at G05s for some time now, and I stumbled upon a 2019 X5, x50i with 68k miles. Car looks to be very well maintained, with 1 Owner, and servicing done at the same BMW dealership every ~6k miles. Same dealer where the vehicle was purchased new is now selling it. Has the M Sport package, DHP, and Driver Assist. I understand that BMW's v8 is not as solid as the i6, but apparently some efforts were made in reliability lately (TU2). I知 used to powerful cars (Had a couple Evos, Boosted Zs, etc.), and currently drive a 2017 F15 with the 6 Cyl, but this would be my first 8Cyl. Car is listed for $42k. Would you do it? |

It is a gamble. Think of it as buying the car for $50K. Keep $8K stashed in case it needs something major fixed.
I don't think you will have any issues with the engine or transmission. I haven't seen any of that on this forum. |

Are you mechanically inclined/resourceful in car DIY?
Even though these things are pretty locked down, there are still several components that can be repaired/replaced, provided you have the skill set. The car is completely out of warranty, so anything that breaks is coming out of your pocket, and while it'd still cost money, you can almost certainly economize by knowing your way around the car and not just running to the nearest BMW dealer, where the hourly labor rate is almost certainly at a premium, and the markup on parts is not dainty. |

That 2019 is 2 upgrades ago with the lower powered V8. Get at least a 2020 M50i upgraded with about 70 more horsepower if you are interested in a V8 and hopefully find one with less mileage.
If you know the market and have researched it you will get what you pay for. I'd pass on that '19 which is now 5 model years old and nearly 70k miles. I'd look for something newer or maybe an even later model X3 M40i which is a fantastic vehicle that would more than scratch your itch for power. As mentioned above, a 2019 is a gamble and one where the hosue advantage is strong. Last edited by cobramite; 10-03-2023 at 07:38 AM.. |

70K miles on a 4 year old vehicle seems like more than average annual driving, and almost certainly means year-round use. I would inspect thoroughly for evidence of rust and corrosion. Drive train components are easily replaced but rust will uncontrollably metastasize. Ask if it's CPO'd (probably over the mileage limit?) and extended warranty eligible. If you're left with the prospect of covering all future repairs, I'd keep shopping.

$48,000 seems high with 70k miles.
Took me 15 seconds to find this: https://www.carfax.com/vehicle/5UXJU...E&gclsrc=aw.ds |

Thank you all for your feedback!
Based on what everyone has said, I have decided not to get this one, but instead get a loaded G05 with the i6. I知 sure I値l enjoy it (maybe not as much) and it値l be much more reliable. |

I would go $33-34k maximum and have an expert do a full inspection before signing anything. At the mid $45k range you could probably find something with much less mileage.

The reliability on both are the same engine wise. The V8 N63TU3 is well known after many revisions and this was there final version to it. The i6 b58 is solid. But the issues with G05 are mainly transfer case and electrical on both variants. Based off my experience the i6 encounter oil leaks and pcv issues. Although I'm sure it can handle much more high mileage than the V8. You might feel safer with the b58 but G05 just feel proper in the V8 variation. Ive trial and error myself up the ladder starting from the N20 to N55 and now N63TU3

In general, BMW at 70K, even with inline6, you are looking at serpentine bell tensioner pully, coolant expansion tank, thermostat .. these are routine stuffs. I would consider do fluid for transmission, transfer case, both diff.

Hi all, Wanted to drop a quick note and say that I pickup up this 2019 G05 (i6) yesterday. 50k miles. I was looking for a dark color w/ the brown leather interior, fully loaded (Driver Assist, Air Suspension, Laser lights, M Sport and all the goodies) and found one ~1000 miles away from me. Drive home was a blast, and getting the black grill is probably going to be the first thing I’ll do ! Next step is to look at the aftermarket modules and see what can be done, software wise. Not craving too much power, it’ll be more for unlocking software features. Thank you all for the answers and discussions - your input was much appreciated! |
