Drive Recorder Not Working after .55 Update

Hi all,

Just updated to .55 - and drive recorder seems to be greyed out - meaning I can still see the drive recorder interface just can not press or click the start recording button. Can anyone test to see if your .55 Drive Recorder still works?

Try an iDrive reboot. Mine keeps crashing and needs a reboot to get it back up and running. Locking and leaving the car doesn’t seem to do the trick

I press and hold down the mute/volume button until the screen goes off and then restarts. It can take over 20 sec for this to happen. I only ever do it with the engine running as doing this in other states can cause the iDrive to simple shut down rather than reboot

It's a new feature for the 2020 models that come with the executive package (US models).

had the same issue since i got the car on .55. gotta reset idrive for it to work. i keep a drive recorder widget on my 2nd page to see if it's functioning. if it's not, i just reset my idrive. it's annoying and hope it gets fixed.

Looks like the November series of software updates can't come soon enough.

I wonder how much real world testing BMW actually does before they ship these updates.

Based on this and some other bits I don’t think they are doing many trials at all!

Before a longer drive or one where the drive recorder is especially important, would it be worth doing a iDrive reboot before setting out? Would this cause any issues in other ways I wonder?

You can always check if the drive recorder is working or not by going to the app or adding it to the home screen. If it works, no need to reset.

I would have expected there to be a minimum from a regulatory perspective to prove you haven't affected the integrity of any safety related systems but maybe they have done that with the physical architecture so they can fuck around with iDrive all they want without the cost of recertification.

I think you are right. Testing of these software updates could be better. The only question is why. Implementing a sound testing process isn't that difficult.

Exactly. Odd that this is only rolled out to 2020 models when it's just a software update that would enable it

On a different note I was trying out the export to USB function today and noticed that the rear view is reversed on the output. In the clip I viewed I was passed on my right by a truck but on the playback the truck appeared to pass on my left. The door camera and front views are correct.

I assume this is something to do with the rear camera being set up as a reversing/rear view camera.

I also noticed the output has a meta data file which has speed, location and date/time. I wonder if there is any way this can be linked to the video playback, anybody know of a website where the video and meta data
can be uploaded to do that?

This wouldn't be the first time BMW limited a simple software update to a new MY. In other words, it happens commonly. Honestly, don't expect BMW to back port any features to a previous MY. If they do, it's a rare gift. However, maybe with the remote software update feature they'll begin to think differently. Time will tell.

You might be able to load the meta data file as a subtitle file. Try VLC player or Media Player Classic (on PC).

I am not on .55 and this morning I spotted that my drive recorder is also greyed out; it is back up after restarting as per the advice here but not sure what is causing it.

I'm unable to find a solid cause. But I did realize that when I use my 3D remote view on my app. About 90% of the time, the driver recorder has malfunctioned.

Thanks for the update. I too will keep an eye. For now I have added drive recorder to the home screen to keep an eye and will monitor for few days and after that will try remote 3D view.
