Thoughts and Feedback Requested: Winter Tire / Wheel Set-Up

I currently have the 21" wheels w/ Pirelli RFT tires (275/40/21 and 315/35/21).

My plan is to take off my current summer tires and replace them with the same size tires in the All Season category (Pirelli Scorpion). These new tires will run me a total of $1,700 w/ tax mount & balance etc. These tires are Non RFT. As a result, I am planning on buying a "Space Saver Spare" from BMW.

I live in CT - New England and will be driving in the cold and sometimes in the snow (albeit mostly when roads are plowed).
I have been told that All season is good enough in the winter.
I would have gone with Winter tires but they don't make winter tires in my size 21".

I am then planning on putting my current summer tires on a Black color set of new 21" wheels that I will buy in the Spring. I have a Black Saphire X5 and want the "Black Out / Murdered Out" look.

My main question is do you think that this will work as far as the All Season Tires and the Space Saver Spare (in an emergency).

I don't want to buy a 3rd set of wheels and tires for winter as I really want a set of black wheels for my preferred look and would ideally want to utilize the existing 21" wheels for winter.

I welcome, appreciate and look forward to all feedback.

Thanks.

I think your plan sounds fine. I had an F15 X5 with all-seasons for the last 5-6 winters here in MN. I had absolutely no problems getting around. Would dedicated winter tires have better grip? Sure. But if you drive reasonably you will be just fine with all-season tires.

I liked the look of the 21 and 22 inch wheel choices for the G05, but ended going with the 20s because I didn't want the hassle of swapping out wheels and tires twice a year, and there are many more choices for tires of all kinds in the 20 inch size. Once my OE tires wear out, I'll probably switch to the non-runflat Continental DWS. I have the factory spare tire option.

If you are going to spend the time and money getting a separate set of tires for the winter, I would say get real winter tires.

From your post, your main issue seems to be getting them to fit your OEM wheels. You can maybe get some 21" winter tires if you look for narrower (than oem) winter tires. A good tire shop can help you out with this to be sure that they fit correctly.

You can also consider selling your OEM 21" wheels if you can't find winters to fit them.

All depends on how you drive. Agressive driving in x5 50 on all season tires is bad in winter and in summer. For 90k car get the best tires you can get for summer and winter. Michelin pilot alpine 5 suv is great high performance winter tire. An order from tire rack on black rims. 20s will be lighter and cheaper for winter

Yes it does exist. Dealers are starting to get the tires now. I haven't found anybody other than BMW dealers who have the rear 21s. I've been quoted about $650/each rear tire and $350/each for the fronts.

I would guess the 19" number is a just copy-paste mistake, the 741M is a 21" wheel that is also a configurator option.

Are these 21" tires actual WINTER tires or are they ALL SEASON?

I have been quoted these exact tires but in the ALL SEASON variety.

Additional question:

I have found the 275 front tires available in a WINTER variety from one manufacturer.

What are your thoughts on getting the 275/40/21 from one company in WINTER category for the Front and then getting the 315/35/21 rears in ALL SEASON from another maker?

Is it OK to have WINTER tires in front and ALL SEASON in rear?

Thank You.

Are WHAT? tires winter or all season? Are you referring to the tires in the link to shopBMW.com that was in post #6 above? If so, you can simply google M&S Pirelli Scorpion Winter r-f to see what type of tire they are.

Its not recommended to run different type of tires between axles...if you've ever seen any of the videos that compare winter vs summer tires...take note of how differently the tires react in cold temperature and warm temperature. You will have one axle out-performing in acceleration, braking, turning, and stopping vs the other axle which can make the car "bi-polar" in winter conditions.

I personally don't mix and match brands, let alone tire types. Not sure if there's anything "wrong" with doing that - I just never would.

Appreciate the feedback.

I'll stick with one tire brand.

Is it OK to run a 305/35/21 instead of the current factory 315/35/21?

If so, this would likely be the way to go for me as it would provide a full WINTER Set-Up instead of ALL SEASON.

confirmation would be appreciated.

There is a 1% difference in diameter so it should be ok, way more stance than the square setup IMHO.

If you drive a lot on icy roads then get studded tires. Otherwise get M+S winter tires because they are better on wet and snowy roads.
If you only use M+S winter tires in winter then get northern europe tires which are softer in cold temperatures.

No it is not OK.

Having different grip levels between the axles is asking for trouble.
