In the M50i the ivory/blue Merino option is only $1K more. Trim as well- I don't want aluminum or carbon fiber. Others are another $1k, & I don';t like any of them. With the M50i I went with fineline wood at no extra cost. |

MRJOED2 I agree the XM5 will be a sharper handler, but it does come at the cost of a harder ride, no question about that. And I also noticed in the configurer if you want anything but black Merino, it's $3500 more.
This is not true. You can have orange, silverstone, white or a few other colors for no charge. Guys it's the X5M not the XM5 you make it sound like a vacuum cleaner. |

On the X5M Competition, Full Merino is a no cost option if you don't want the base Alcanatara Cloth combination.

After living with both, how do you feel about the m lineage in the SUVs? I have a 2020 M4 Comp and felt the driving dynamics of the f95 x5m to be extremely compromised vs the sharpness I get out of the f82. I needed an SUV for the mountains and hauling more gear and was disappointed. The M50i, while definitely softer, still had the brute of a v8 when on the long pedal, and the multi contour seats are a game changer vs competitors like the cayenne imo. Not sure where I'm going with this, but am surprised to see so many M car purists in this thread when I felt kinda cheated after reading the reviews touting a "physics defying" platform :/

I mean you are comparing the handling of the X5M to your M4. If that leaves you disappointed then the M50 will further that same feeling. Aside from a maybe a Cayenne GTS/Turbo nothing else comes close in terms of handling. Not crapping on the M50i at all but it all comes down to what you are after. The M50i is probably the sweet spot for 98% of the folks out there in terms of value/performance.
Maybe your expectation needs to be dialed back because no matter what these are big/heavy suvs and just can't handle like your M4 no matter what. Once you compare them to other SUVs then the physics defying description holds. My previous car was a F80 M3 Comp. Alan

When I was at the BMW Performance Center track in Thermal, CA a couple of weeks ago, I got to try out a X5MC, M4C, Z4 M40i and a M850i on the track. While the X5MC did great, of course the other three vehicles were even better. The best of them all was the Z4. Though I think if they brought an M2C over, that of course would be the best on their tight track. But for the size, height and weight of the X5MC, it practically does defy physics. The day after the track event, I took a ride on the 74 outside Palm Dessert. I was never on that road before and I wanted to try my X5MC out on the tight turns leading to the top. I had a Charger Hellcat behind me that looked like he wanted to play a bit. He faded back after the third turn. At the top when I pulled over to turn around, he finally caught up and we talked for a bit. He was fascinated about how well my car did. When I told him it was all stock, he was in awe. The BMW M xDrive system is fantastic in turns. You can actually feel the power going to what ever wheel needs it in the turns. I think he will be shopping for a new X5M soon. |

I say that because I think the first thing you have to differentiate is sharpness in canyon runs versus track driving - a lot of people equate the two, or use the track as the ultimate measure of a car's "sharpness" but, TBH, I haven't been at a track in 10+ years, but 80% of the miles my last 3 M3/4s have all been driven in anger. If you show up for La Honda runs, you know what I"m talking about. For me, canyon runs are infinitely more rewarding than the track for a lot of reasons not relevant here, but for me the key is differentiating "sharpness" between track-feel and road-course-feel. On the track, the X5M can be amazing: So that's great for people taking their SUVs to the track but, to be controversial, the X5M ain't a sharp road-run SUV compared to the competition. Yes, on the track, it's the equal or better than just about anything out there, but on the road, if you're looking for sharpness, then IMO a high-spec Cayenne is probably the way to go. Hate to say it, but Porsche is just way WAY better at suspensions & suspension tuning than BMW not to mention the PDK. I see the X5M as a way different animal - it's more of a sharper road SUV that leans way more M4 than X7 on the road. Yes you can light it up, but it's more about driving a comfort SUV that's able to do some very crazy things if you need it to, and, in the mountains, you usually want or need you to ... in short, it's the perfect car for your use case if you want an SUV. You just can't add 1000lbs and jack a car up on stilts and have it be an M4. If you had said "sharp daily driver" then a high-spec Cayenne is probably the thing. If the goal is mountain bomber or track rat, then the X5M is probably better.

I don't agree, I drove both a 2021 x5m and a m50i I ended up ordering the m50. Once you tick all the options the price ws only about 3k difference. However the x5m was just like sport ++ all the time. It don't have a chill mode... Yes it's slightly quicker. But I'm not taking it to a track and not using launch control so maybe it's a wee bit more fun when you push it but I ordered my m50 with the DHP and it feels the same as the M but in comfort is where I use it 80% of the time. . The x3m/m40 has a much larger gap between the two that's like comparing a 530 vs an M5. I have driven both but after being in an x5m/x5m50 the x3 seems cheap. Bmw pricing has gone stupid you can buy an x3 m competition for 80k and an M3 loaded is 108k |

You feel the big HP difference at highway speeds. The X3MC will push you back into your seat at 80 mph, whereas the M40i will not. I'd imagine the same is true of the M50i and X5MC. |

The M suits my driving style. The others are just too plush for what I'm tryna do.

That said, I do have on order a G80 M3, and i'll be interested to compare that with my F95. I've owned every modern M3 with the exception of the E. As a side note, I've spent a significant part of my life on the track with motorcycles mainly and cars too. You don't need to drive the F95 on the track to appreciate it, most performance enthusiasts love the quicker steering ratio feel, the brake pedal feel, and the rigidity of a perf car--even on regular roads. Some people just prefer that, just like some folks prefer a cushy caddy-like ride for their DD. |

I've driven both, they're both nice. I came from a 2018 X5 50i (before they started calling it the M50i) and wanted more out of an suv. The ride is firm and you feel like there's never a delay in power. As soon as you hit the pedal, the car moves. The M50i has a delay in throttle response and just doesn't feel as nimble.
I will say though, the random noises the M makes because of the stiffness can get pretty annoying. You'll hear a knock or some rattle from the doors on bumps and bad roads (most of NYC has bad roads). |

I've had both (traded M50i for the M) - the X5MC is excellent in every way - hands down worth every penny. Daily driver - no complaints.

I have both
There is a synergy to the X5M that makes it seem like a completely different class of vehicle. Bought the X5 M50 for my wife, I really liked it and decided I would have an X5 also but didn't want the same car as her so I got the X5M. Driving the X5M50 I never thought I would get so much out of the X5M. You can easily try to name the differences like oh its just the seats, exhaust, upper RPM power, etc but in reality it comes together to make a night and day difference and now I feel bored when I drive the M50i although my wife really likes it a lot. The X5M is definitely not too stiff either, I almost feel like the M50 is too soft and we definitely have some trash roads around here. If the 30k price difference is not a deal breaker for you, always get the X5M, imo. |
