Always-on parking cameras on 45e
45e folks:
What do you think about the idea of installing front/back cameras and connect them to an always-on fuser so I can get 24 hours surveillance even during parking? Is the 12v battery automatically charged by the 48 battery during parking? Thanks. EDIT: Found a partial answer in this thread. The 48v system charges the 12v battery, but not during parking. The always-on idea probably won't work, at least not without an added manual switch. Last edited by walkday; 09-22-2021 at 01:02 PM.. |

Moreover, the car may complain about the battery drain if your camera runs for more than 6 hours. I just use BlackVue magic pro that cuts the power after 6 hours. Never had any problems.

Great solution! If I understand it correctly, the magic pro has wires tapped into the fuse box and supplies powers to the camera with a timer and voltage monitor for power cut-off? That's much neater than a camera battery pack solution.

PS even though the BlackVue magic pro doesn’t mention how to set up 6 hours cut off, putting all the switches to upper position and only setting voltage switch to cut off at 12 v makes it cut off power after 6 hours. |

While AGM batteries are better at deeper discharge than a wet cell, IF the camera pulls it down to the cutoff point on a regular basis, you will shorten the life of the AGM battery in the vehicle.
If you take lots of shorter trips, especially in the winter when the electrical load can be higher, that can become more critical. If the battery is discharged enough, it will log a fault in the computer, too, so when it comes time for a warranty battery replacement, you might have issues. None of these are definite...depends on your locale and driving habits, but could happen. |

Don't tax the AGM battery, you'll regret later. I am using the BlackVue 900X with their battery pack, good for ~18 hours in parking mode.
Battery charges in about 30 minutes with an 10 AMP fuse tap.

This! Believe it or not it is possible to abuse an AGM to the point where it leaks and makes a big mess.

Hi dashcam folks,
Following the Manual of BMW Advanced Car Eye 2.0, I installed a VIOFO A129 Pro front-and-back dual dashcam with its wiring kit. Everything including the dashcam's parking mode works like a charm for a week so far. The parking mode has a cutoff voltage of my choice 12.4v. The standard recording mode is on once I pull the lever into D or R (I have a 45e so the engine may not start), and the dashcam enters its parking mode is the moment the car is turned off without a second of delay. I checked the ECU for weird error messages, which I saw when previously tapping the ACC wire to another fuse slot. But, no error message this time (so far at least). Ground wire --- tied to a bolt Battery wire --- tapped to slot F35 of the front footwell fuse box ACC wire --- tapped to slot F205 of the rear fuse box. (The ACC wire must go to the back. Every slot in the front footwell fuse box is either ACC delayed, by 5-10 minutes, or always on.) The tapping uses two piggy tails, but they may eventually come loose. I will buy socket contacts and use them to attach the wires to the backs of the fuse boxes as instructed in the Manual. That will give the fuse boxes a very clean look. Since BMW lets its Advanced Car Eye 2.0 tax the AGM battery until the voltage reaches a cutoff , I trust doing the same but with a different (and better) dashcam shall be fine. |

When installing the battery pack, which fuses did you use? I'm planning on installing the Blackboxmycar Powercell 8 and connecting it to either a Viofo A229 Pro, Thinkware U3000 or the new Blackvue Starves 2 cam when it comes out in Jan. In the meantime, trying to sort out wiring for the battery. Thanks!

An easier solution is to use portable USB phone batteries connected to the 12v sockets & then connect your camera to those portable batteries. That's what I did & I get about 36 hours of use before the batteries are drained. They charge up pretty quickly, so it's a 90% solution.

I did an always on-install/parking mode in my X45e. I have the VIOFO A139 Pro with both front and rear camera. I also used the blackbox Powercell and the viofo hardwire kit.
I put everything in the back nicely tucked away and used the rear fuse box for the 12V accessory input. As the Powercell battery uses 10A or so when hardwired, I did connect the Powercell directly to the 12V battery via an automotive 12V relay controlled by the 12V accessory fuse in the rear panel. With that, I do not pull any significant current from the BMW fuse panel or the fuse tap, only a tiny current is used to control the relay. No issue with discharge either as it only charges when the car is on. As a bonus, I also added an ESP32 and a MOSFET between the Powercell output and the Viofo Hardwire kit (nicely powered by the Powercell USB port) to control the parking mode based on WiFi proximity. When I park in my garage, the ESP32 detects my house network and shuts down the Dashcam. I do the same as work as I park in a parking that is already under security surveillance. That saves a lot of recording time... |
