servicing transfer box

Trying to change the oil in the transfer box in my 2021 x5 40i, using the foxwell nt530, the oil temp shows 0.00 it needs to show over 20c. So it wont open the fill port. No faults on scanning. Any ideas.

I did the same exact thing two weekends ago. My NT530 just kept reading 0.00 C. I eventually just bought some small diameter tubing and shoved it down in there. Was able to get about 550ml out of old fluid and put in a full 700ml of new fluid and called it good.

So you didn’t have to open the ports to get the 550ml out?

No. There should be 700ml in there (that’s what the FSM calls for when refilling). I was able to get 550ml of that out but it wasn’t fun.

Something is directly in the way when you try and stick a hose in there to transfer the fluid out, so you have to have something sturdy enough and thin enough to snake down the case and get fluid out. Not sure if it’s any easier once you open those valves or if they’re just releasing more fluid.

I just called it good enough at 550ml, I’ll do it in another 50k.

What kind of pump/tubing did you use?

I always buy cheap one when I do fluid like this so I can just throw them away when I’m done instead of cleaning them haha.

I used the transfer pump to get the fluid out, then I like using the pumps that screw into the bottle to pump the fluid back in.

Thank you! I’m on the verge of performing this oil change as well and would like to be as prepared as possible for that tight space.

Is it hard to reach under the car? I read some people said you need to reset the adaptation values after changing the fluid.
