X5 45e headlights question

Hi all,

I got myself a X5 45e from 2020 (UK based) and it was meant to have the "Adaptive LED Headlights" (as part of the "visibility" package it got fitted with).

Now, after reading here and there the headlights themselves should have a kind of engraved "BMW Adaptive LED" but mines only have "BMW LED".

So, was I mis-sold? How can I know it's the "adaptive" version I have?

LED Headlights were standard on the 45e in Germany and I think UK as well. The two higher versions were:

552 - Adaptive LED Headlights (Anti-dazzle & turning lighting)
5AZ - BMW Laserlight (The above + Laserlight for high-beam)

Easiest way to check would be if you have the anti-dazzle assist on the blinker stock. Should be two buttons on the side of it. The upper for the BC and the lower for the anti-dazzle assist.

Yes I do have that lower button ; described in my manual as the "highbeam assistant" one.

So I suppose this means it's the Adaptive version, just not badged as such.

Also, is the Adaptive version following the wheel in turns?

Correct. I think on the Pre-LCI BMW only had two badges: The regular "BMW LED", which could both be adaptive or not, and the "BMW Laserlight" with the blue accents. On my 7-series for example I had the adaptive LED and it would say "BMW Adaptive LED" on the side, but it was also otherwise clear that it was LED since DRL's were rectangular and the lights themselves were clearly LED's while the regular xenon had round DRL's and the characteristic bulb-shaped xenon lights. Seems like BMW likes to reserve the different engravings/accents/characteristic features only for the highest option.

Yes, it should be following the wheel in turns. As far as I'm aware the only difference between the BMW Adaptive LED and Laserlight is that laser spot in the middle that I think you can kind-of see here at 6:58. The "BMW Selective Beam", which is the name for the anti-dazzle feature, should be exactly the same.

From what I read from users who had the laserlight most said they could hardly tell when it was on and when it wasn't but judge for yourself if you can tell a difference: Here is a video of the new adaptive headlights with matrix LED but no laserlight.

€dit: Sorry, I might actually be wrong here. I just realized that BMW also offered that anti-dazzle feature without the selective beam so it would simply activate/deactivate high beam depending on the traffic in front of you. I also researched the headlights and it seems both indeed say "BMW LED" and look the same so that's no indicator either. Probably best to check mdecoder.com with your VIN and see which extras you have. The codes for the corresponding extras are above.

Run your VIN at Mdecoder and under lighting it will give the headlights that you have. When we have that code we can determine what features are with those lights. I think that there were three different lighting packages available back then for the UK but I'm sure we can get some info from members once we know what you have.

You have Adaptive LEDs so you should be set. The markings on the headlights vary by option and country so wouldn't worry about that. Other than the markings, is something not working like you expected?

Great to get confirmation! I've been mostly driving in town for the past few weeks so I didn't get a change to try any of the highbeam assistance. At least now it sets expectations!
