Post-LCI X5 x40i - anything I should know before a purchase?
Hi everyone,
First time posting in this forum. I'm a long time admirer of the roundel and have owned five BMWs so far (E90, F10, F01, his-n-hers G30). Currently, I'm thinking about picking up one of the remaining 2024 X5 (xDrive40i) off the dealer's lot. The X5 will be primarily driven by wife (not a car person) and replace a Lexus RX. Hence, I'm a bit concerned about reliability. Both of our G30s (MY 2019) gave us quite a bit of headache during COVID with various electrical and mechanical faults, which kinda pushed her to the Lexus RX. But now we are hoping to come back to the brand. Is there any common issue I should know about 2024 X5 x40i before making a purchase? Have fun and happy driving! |

Welcome to the forum. I don't think you will find any common issues for the MY24 40i. Unlike the 50e, the 40i should be a very reliable vehicle for you.
Out of curiosity, why are you getting a MY24? Do you have a specific one that you are considering or just want to get a used one?

We moved from BMWs to Lexi a few years ago. The Lexi were tremendously reliable, and terminally boring. We both traded back into Bimmers within the last year. She somewhat reluctantly went from an RX to an LCI X6 x40i. No problems thus far. She’s thrilled. Do it, and don’t look back.

I wouldn't even consider the idea of replacing an RX350 with an X5 for a person u interested in cars. When people say "the G05 is reliable", that's in context of German cars. They're still not going to be at all comparable to the lack of issues of a Lexus, especially an rx350.

Have a 2023 Rx350 Fsport loaded as well and boy is it boring and underpowered to drive. I wouldn’t say Lexus is super reliable. Ours just got back from the dealer cuz the lift gate wouldn’t unlatch at all. It was stuck shut and it wasn’t due to user error. At just 7k miles I shouldn’t have to be dealing with any of this. I’ve had 3 prior Lexus vehicles and all were for the most part reliable but our 2017 RX350 Luxury package had issues too. My wipes stopped working at 51k miles and we couldn’t figure it out then the moldy smell developed and before I knew it we had a water leak that was never found but there was condensation forming inside the car and all over the instrument cluster. We traded it in on the 2023 Rx350 and now wish to sell it so we can get something else. Lexus has lost its ways imo.
My coworkers wife has a 2016 RX350 Luxury package and her car has had many issues too! Most recently she also found mold in her car due to a leak and had to have the interior gutted and cleaned. It was bad from the pictures he showed.

I would suggest to revisit the idea of MY25
I got an early MY24 x5 40i and would say that there are some issues and headaches to address such as interior assembly tightness, parts quality consistency. My car has transmission shifting issues that I'm still working with the dealership to address. Also, MY25 40i will be available with air suspension and that's big plus. Otherwise, the car driving confidence and ride quality is amazing |

My theory on the current rankings of reliability for the g05 is that they're the most reliable BMWs to date. So like ma y victims.of abuse, they see small improvements in behavior as a major improvement, and reward them massively.
I came from domestics where the bmw level of reliability would be considered a lemon. Our expedition has been in the shop twice in two years, for nuisances with the Ecoboost v6 and the 10R80 transmission, both considered to be known problems that Ford addressed in later builds, and their fix is to upgrade to those versions that are "bulletproof". My G05 has been to the shop 3 times in the 6 months I've owned it. My friends have a rav4 that has been to the dealer 0 times in 4 years. We had a rogue that was in once in 6 years for a battery replacement under warranty. Maybe I'm unlucky with my x5, but I suspect not, considering the first option on the dealer phone systems is service, not sales. |

Good point, plus a year newer. I'm sure there are some dealers that will have good discounts on MY25 as well.

I got one LCI 24, “ petrol car after approx 15 years and love it. Amazing torque even compared to a diesel (diesels have nice torque). Had zero issues with car, transmisson etc. Didnt have a super early allocation (produced July 2023 I think). Even if I could would not order it with air suspension , if they offered DHP (air suspension pro) then I would definitely wait for MY25. This being your wife’s car I would not bother too much if she doesnt care about these things (mine does not care, also doesnt like BMWs which makes it also better for me.

More fun, more powerful, etc. sure. But a lot of people (in this case the OP's wife) don't care about that kind of stuff. And you don't buy the 40i for fun to drive, you buy the v8. |

Also- the Lexus and the b58 x5 should be very close in reliability being as they’re both essentially Toyotas in a sense….. |

My wife and I came from all Japanese cars. After a pretty awful experience with my 2007 RAV4, we jumped ship over to BMW and haven't really looked back.
We purchase cars to own long term so not really a big list here, but bought my 2011 E93 335i new and still have it today. No it hasn't been perfect and won't compare to say a Lexus IS, but it's amazing to drive and worth the upkeep. 13 years on, it still put a smile on both of our faces whenever we drive it, especially in top-down cruising weather. My wife's 2012 E70 X5 35d was fantastic for the 6 years we had it. It was problem free other than I think the driver's side door lock actuator broke, which was covered under either factory or CPO warranty (bought out the lease). Its reliability was rated "much worse than average" in Consumer Reports, but I figured after the crap Toyota we had, why keep bothering with Japanese cars? And it turned out the BMW was much better. And now our CPO MY22 G05 X5. Love it so far and will definitely be keeping it long-term. It's actually rated very highly in CR so expectations are a little higher for it, but I expect there's going to be some big dollar upkeep and maintenance items in the 6-10 year range. It's almost always cheaper to keep maintaining an older car than it is to buy a new one. My wife LOVES our BMW's. She could never go back to a Toyota/Lexus. People say they don't care, until they're in a properly driving car for the first time, and then they realize what they've been missing.

G05 40i is quite reliable. It was ranked most reliable midsize luxury SUV. RX was my wife's dream SUV and she vowed that she would get a new one whenever a new generation comes. Guess what? G05 destroyed that dream.

Which Toyota had nothing to do with despite many rumors to the contrary.
