Opinion on scratched interior trim (by dealer)

My new X5 had a button sticking on the overhead console. Dealer fixed that, but unfortunately dinged the wood trim. See pic. It's minor, but with a new car it catches my eye.

Would you push them to replace? Don't want to create additional defects or introduce rattles. Open to opinions.

They may be able to fix it/make it less noticeable without replacing the trim. It wouldn't hurt to bring it to their attention and see what they say.

I agree. Could be an easy fix.

I'd buff it out...annoying they caused it but seems like it's fixable by buffing.

Thanks all. I have some Plastic-x that I'll try tomorrow. Otherwise will show my dealer.

Guess I don't know what I'm looking at - looks like a reflection of part of the dash on a cell phone screen?

Had to take a quick screenshot of the original image due to upload size. Should have cropped it. The ding is directly above the hazard light switch and to the left.

Use a quality auto wax. It is what is used in furniture refinishing.

You treat it just like the paint on your car. It’s a lacquer over the wood and is similar to the clear coat on your paint. . If you want to bring your fine wood interior out to the next level, just use a quality carnauba wax and it will “pop”. You won’t believe how much better a hand rubbed finish looks on interior wood trim. It’s one of the differences RR does to their wood finishes that takes it up a few levels. I use P21 as it is my ultimate favorite automotive finishing wax. Just apply a bit on a white microfiber cloth and use your index finger to buff long smooth strokes across the wood trim pieces. You won’t believe how much better the middle console will look after a few passes of wax.

Might need something a little more aggressive - I've had good luck with this on a variety of plastics:

I have used this as well to remove hairline scratches. I would start out as mild as possible, then move up to a plastic polish. You may get some hazing from the plastic polish but that can also be buffed out with a wax.

I can get about any scratch out to a mirror finish with P21 paint cleanser as it is so mild and doesn’t leave any hazing. You might have to go over the spot 5-8 times but it’s worth the end results because I don’t have to fix buffing marks.

These two products for your paint and wood trim are my secret concourse weapons.

I would show it to the dealer first. Once you start messing with it then it is only on you.

Agreed. Once you touch it, your options to have the dealer fix it are probably gone.

I’m curious. I now use Mequiar’s Gold Class Carnauba Plus Premium Paste wax. You refer to P21S as your favorite “finishing wax”. What is a “finishing wax” vs a typical Carnauda wax and why do you like it better than other waxes? My preference is to use the best product available: if I’m going to invest my time I want the best possible result.
FYI, I use wax primarily to protect the paint finish. I look to polish to produce a shine.
I’m anxious now to wax our 650’s trim.

All waxes are not created equal. 27 years of competitive concours has made me very picky on many aspects of how a wax lays. Level of shine is a big factor. Some basic waxes give a chalky muted shine. Others give what is known as a “wet shine”. How the polish sets up the paint and how the finishing wax adheres is complicated. How you polish also makes a big difference. P21 wax is applied and wiped off without drying. It also doesn’t leave any white staining on black plastic trim pieces. Just to keep it simple, P21 paint cleanser and P21 wax is pro level of shine on all colors and its application is easier with superior results.

This is a “wet finish”

Easy solution, clumsy dealer caused it, then clumsy dealer needs to fix it !

You shouldn't worry about HOW, its THEIR problem. For the money you've paid, you're entitled to an undamaged vehicle. I mean this isn't somewhere down in the footwell or corner where its not noticeable, it's right in the center console - so sticks out like dogs balls! ..you and your passengers will be looking at this and asking WTF every time - so it needs to be fixed.

Why should you go out of your way to fix or repair something caused by BMW themselves?

Just wondering...do you see the the scratch in the OP’s photo? For some reason it’s not clear at all to my eyes.

Yes. Little white upside down “U” scratch. From the pic, it doesn’t look that deep and can be buffed out.

I agree with this only if the replacement is less invasive than the fix. Depending on the dealer, they “should” have a competent body shop guy on staff that will try a simple buff out first. I myself hate any dealer poking around my car. Even oil changes give them opportunity to inadvertently damage or scratch something. I have a standing order to never even wash my vehicles even new deliveries. The only hands I like on my cars are mine.
