iMacs

I'm looking into buying an iMac after Christmas, probably the 20-inch 2.66GHz. I'm totally unfamiliar with the performance characteristics of these things and am curious if the standard 2gb of memory will be enough to comfortably run the machine.

I only plan on using it for the internet and maybe some document stuff, but the woman wants to take advantage of some of the photo/video tools.

Any other suggestions about what to buy or not to buy in software/hardware/service would also be appreciated. Should also add that I'm probably going the refurbished route to save $200.

Thanks!

Edit - Please no Mac vs. PC debates. Woman really wants to try the Mac for photo/video, so Santa delivers.

Always more ram is better. However I think in January the imac is getting updated. You might want to wait a few days until macworld to see about the update.

Yeah, definitely wait until the end of January or so. The iMacs are due for a refresh and will get NVIDIA's new chipset( the same one that is in the MBP most likely).

It is due for an update. Wait it out, and there is proof it is coming as the latest version of Leopard( 10.5.6) has support for it and the Mini in it.

Update: Rumors that Mac is starting to constrict supply of the current iMacs which is leading to speculation that they may be preparing to roll out the update. Oh please, oh please!

Any particular reason it has to be an Imac? Just buy a Notebook and a HP External screen if it's only for Photos and some video. That way you have the portability option later on. The white Macbook just got updated with the new video card so if you buy that, you'll be set when the new operating system comes out which means you'll be good for a LONG time. It's 999 but with a student discount it'll be 950. If you don't buy it from the Apple store there are places online to get it even cheaper.

I make movies all the times on my new macbook...as long as she isn't making movies with special effects using Final Cut Pro you'll be ok. You can use Final Cut on the Macbook (I do) it just takes forever to render b/c of effects like Magic Bullets. If you're using iMovie, you will be fine.

That's not a bad suggestion, but isn't what I'm really looking for. I don't need portability because we both have a laptops from work (no student discount for me ) and I prefer the sleek all-in-one desktop with a large screen. Also, after buying the MacBook and a monitor I'd be in iMac territory anyway.

I doubt she'll be using Final Cut, but who knows what she'll want to do once she gets going. Hopefully nothing the extra RAM I'll be getting can't handle. Thanks for the suggestion!

You really don't need more than 2 gigs at this point, even for video editing. However, if you do need more RAM later it is dirt cheap and easily replaceable. RAM is probably the easiest upgrade to perform on a computer.

Agreed...don't worry about the RAM now. Once you get your iMac if its not enough then purchase it when you need it. And it'll be cheaper than what the apple store will sell it to you for as an upgrade when you build it online!!

Good advice both, no harm in taking a wait-and-see approach. But don't worry, there's no way I'd buy the RAM from Apple that's marked up 200%.

In case anyone was following this thread, Apple updated the iMacs (and Mac Minis, Airport Extremes and Time Capsules) on Tuesday.

FWIW, I wasn't wild about the updates so I picked up one of the refurbished older models that suits my needs just fine. Ended up being $500 cheaper than if I had purchased it new when I first started looking.

The best part was that my girlfriend demanded to pay for everything!

The worst part is that my girlfiend is paying for the iMac so that I can put my money toward a bigger/better engagement ring!
