Well it had to happen sooner or later with the 50i M-Sport and a speeding ticket

Just to give the feeling of what the 50i M-Sport is like driving around to those that don’t know. Think of it as a attack dog on a chain with a steak just out of reach. It always wasn’t to push its speed regardless how soft you drive it. It’s almost comical how much you have to consciously hold it back. It’s a beast. Typically I will go to areas where I can let the beast out of the cage just to get it out of its system in a safe remote environment. Think “stupid fast”.. So yesterday I am driving my kids to the Little League World Series parade. I am behaving myself and only have it in “adaptive mode” and I look back to see a trooper in my mirror. Ugh. I find out I was going 70mph in a 55mph which is like 1/8th of a inch movement of the go pedal. Luckily my working with the county sheriff office and LE history got me a warning and a nod of understanding from this fresh young officer. What concerned me was I thought I was behaving myself. I am going to have to recalibrate my senses on speed as with the windows up in the X5 there is no difference in feeling from 55mph to 90mph. You just never feel like you are even going fast ever unless you constantly watch the heads-up speedo display. I am sure I would have gotten a ticket had this been in my new M2C as that car looks and sounds like a hooligan but the X5 SUV is total stealth.

Consider this a public service message.

Those who wish to ignore PSL need effective CMs. I have done well with a combination of R7, V1, and Waze.

This past weekend I averaged over 80 mph on the open road - according to the G05 dash data - which meant I did not stay above triple digits very long.

Sorry mate, but I have used CMs for 30 years and have no conflicts when running R7 and V1 rightly configured and carefully positioned.

Well its only gonna get more interesting once people get their M50i past the break in period, and then even more so once the X5M/X6M hits the streets.

We throw around the term “monster” and “beast” only because the 50i M-Sport is stupid fast even for a sport sedan. In a SUV it is the ultimate sleeper. If your a performance minded driver, it’s so easy to fall in love with the 50i every time you drive it.

Lined up with a GT500 (2014) on Sunday. Using launch control I pulled on him all the way up to 100 and had to throttle down due to space. We both pulled off to talk and needless to say he was super pissed.... He was asking what aftermarket parts I have, I said zero. He then asked who tuned it I said BMW.... He seriously did not believe me and asked if I was building a sleeper. I said nope just daily driver.... It was just me so I wasn't able to get any video of it or anything. I honestly thought he was going to pull off me around 30mph or so but I had it from start to finish always pulling away. I didn't see that coming at all... Once again just waiting for the ticket lol.... Now I have to get to the track and get actual numbers!!!!

Yup. Remember back in February on my Disney trip I had a kid in a new Mustang GT on my tail at 80mph on i95 with my family of 4 and all the luggage for a 2 week road trip in the X5. I put the hammer down and he tried to follow but I leaped ahead so fast at 80mph+ that he backed way off.

The 50i M-Sport isnt just a fast SUV, its a fast performance car. The fact that its in a SUV package makes me giddy every time I flex its muscle.

It scarred one of my friends who I let drive the X5. She had no idea she was going 100+ because of how quiet, refined and well it handles speed. You can easily hit 100 without even thinking about it if you're not careful. She was so taken aback by the X5 that now she wants one This is the SUV that when equipped properly can change your view of how a 5300lb roadtripping monster can be a sports sedan.

So may I ask, is the power of a V8TT setting your new normal state around that 500ps mark after some months of driving it, or is it still capable of scaring the shit out of you? I am on a countdown to my very first V8 (M50i) coming in Feb, and the switch will be from a 540i. Up until last year, I had some nicely specced cars, mostly around the 60k€ mark, and therefore always with a sensible compromise on 4-cylinder motors. However, sensible is pretty boring, especially after you get a taste of what a 3/4/5/600+ ps engine means for the true BMW experience. My current 540i was thus a landmark in taking a small step away from the 4-pot crowd, and I must say I love it -- every time I got in it I got chills from hearing a little more growl when starting it up, and at any opportunity I will let it open up (hit 258 km/h on the Autobahn the other day). However, what was first somehow mind-blowing acceleration, has in just a few months turned into "meh, could have a bit more punch, exhaust is too muted"...the transition from pure awe to my new normality and a desire for more happened, and I wonder if it will be the same for the M50i. V8 owners, what it your experience?

If you drive it enough you will always get used to anything!!! My X5 is my DD and still surprises me, but right now I'm shopping for something more fun say M8 Comp, or I might actually dabble into an exotic of some sort. If I drive anything enough it becomes normal.

Still putting a smile on my face. As mentioned you get use to power but it also corrupts you to always want to feel that hard push any chance you get . The problem is that push always is way beyond any speed limit and it happens so fast that you find yourself at those “lose your license” level of speed. The funnest/bizarre part is you will always be reminding yourself you are in a SUV. That’s the novelty that never gets old.
