Given we already have Tesla Model X for 2 years and Benz munch launched all electric EQC and Audi has all electric suv about to launch (not to mention Jag ipace) I have to say I am not impressed. Yeah it's an improvement over the F15 40e but it's just an evolutionary update when the revolution has already happened.

Am I the only one feeling this way?
Thats what the iX3 is for, but i like this update, and much prefer plug-ins over full electric vehicles

50 miles is sufficient for my around town needs and the petrol engine will finally provide enough power for a large SUV. Hopefully, this will be available when my lease is up in 2020.

I hate seeing all these comments about the low range. Range is nothing more than efficiency multiplied by battery capacity. The PHEVs might have efficiency of 3 miles per kW/hr on the high side. Each kW/hr of battery is still around $200 so with typical margins it would need to sell for $250. Right now consumers seem to only be willing to buy the 40e for a $0 premium over the 35i. Therefore each extra 3 miles of range loses BMW about $200-250. If you were an executive or shareholder would you throw that kind of money away?

This is very good! Mercedes has a very strong contender with the GLE hybrid. Pairing it with a 6-cyl and 50 mile range makes this nearly perfect!

Sign me up! Coming from the 40e, loving the upgrades: 50 MI range, upgraded engine and standard air suspension.

Same here. That extra row of seats is a mandatory option for us.

Full electric is still not practical for family suv, which is used more often on road trips. I actually prefer the PHEV approach. Our daily commute is less than 50 miles so the electric range is enough, and we can still use it on longer road trip without worrying about charging.

Is BMW doing something right for once? Great move with the I6. I'll be waiting in line for this one.

Diesel is dead.

Full Electric X5 is just a matter of time... Right behind the iX3.

With all the money BMW has invested in batteries lately it's not that far away.

it would be much more efficient than gas. i can't understand why there isn't a single hybrid diesel from any manufacturer.

Volvo had a V60 D6 phev for a while, I think there was something with not being hot enough for efficient cleaning of the exhausts when in mostly electric but sometimes ICE mode.

interesting. i've often thought it was something with the diesel that they didn't want to incorporate with this tech... they do offer start/stop on the diesels, so thats not it.
i thought it would be cool to have a diesel engine with batteries under the floor/cargo area. the diesel engine constantly idles and charges 1/2 of the batteries as the car uses the other half. then, as one of the batteries runs low, the power delivery and charging switches places via a management system. the diesel would also power the drive wheels when needed.

As a current 40e driver, these are all fantastic improvements. My only gripe is the car not being able to use regenerative braking to charge the battery past 54%, which is the Achilles heel of the current 40e.

Also, our current lease ends in December, which means I have to find another alternative for a year or so which may force us into a 40i.

50miles is not bad at all for a hybrid. the battery size in this will definitely get it more federal incentives, meaning if BMW price this right, it will sell like 530e.

Super glad it's a 3.0 l engine. For the first time I would consider getting a hybrid.
