Center dash speaker is starting to deteriorate!

I thought it was black lint but when I tried to swipe it off the coating came off exposing metal underneath!!! Vehicle is 5 months old.

The dashboard speaker is the cheapest part of the whole interior. It is absolutely horrible to touch.
I don't know why they couldn't have just used the same speaker grill as the doors, because whenever I clean the dash, I have to avoid the speaker grille or it fills up the speaker holes with bits of my cloth.

It’s a metal frame coated with a rubber like surface. The metal heats in the sun and degrades the rubber. Poor design.

Use a microfiber towel, they are the best things since sliced bread and leave nothing behind. You can buy them in bulk from Amazon. Its the only thing I use now, especially great for streak free glass cleaning and the black shiny plastic in the center console, LCD screens, etc.

Nothing will work will on a rubbery surface though but its best to clean the grill when its not hot from sitting in the sun.

The important spec on microfiber towels is the GSM count, too high a number and they won't pick up water well, too low and you might as well just use a terry cloth towel, go for the 325 count. Here's a link to a pkg in Amazon. Be sure when you put them in the washing machine, not to use any fabric softener, same goes for the dryer.

Which audio system do you have? Is your car out in the sun a lot? Just curious about how your car and its use aligns with my own.

Using edgeless microfiber towels is key, those don't appear to be edgeless (the edges can cause scratches/marring) but otherwise yes

And they need to be tagless too. Couldn’t tell if those were.

I use a microfiber only. I have the base system. I live in Maryland and use a reflexive sun blocker.

This should not be a problem at a vehicle like this. I do not do my own interior but I have a carwash I go too. Hopefully I will not have that problem.

edgeless ones are generally tagless, at least I'd hope so

I do use a microfiber towel, and the speaker grill rips all the buds off.

I avoid touching the speaker grill with anything! I wiped it with a microfiber the first week and spent the next month picking debris from the holes.

Yea that thing is so weird. I have premium microfiber and the moment it touches that grill it gets stuck. Its so hard to clean the edges without touching it. Maybe next time I'll try air spray. What a PITA!

How difficult would it be to remove the speaker grill and refinish it in some "cleaning friendly" material? Strip and paint it, cover it with a fine woven fabric/grill cloth - I mean totally strip anything that is covering the holes from the bottom and top and then spray glue the fabric of choice. I don't know but it has to be a royal pita the way it is. I'm always cleaning my windshield and dash, can't imagine having a sticky rubber thing in the middle of my dash that I have to carefully avoid, it would drive me to do something with it and it doesn't seem as though going back to the dealer is the answer, you would just get more of what you already have.

I have a pair of binoculars that have some kind of a smooth rubbery coating. For the first few years, they were fine but then the coating became sticky. Not the kind of sticky that left gunk on your hands but a strange sort of sticky feeling, no one liked touching them. Same thing happened to a battery powered pepper mill we have. I stripped the rubbery covering off with lacquer thinner and under that covering was a smooth shiny black plastic that now looks good and feels good in your hands.

What material is the speaker grill made from? Metal, plastic ???

Same thing happened to me and of course the gold fibers always attract my eye when driving.
