That picture looks photoshopped to me. I've never seen an error in that location of the display.

Has he done any coding or used a chip at all? A quick google suggests its from a botched coding update. Signatures and checksums are often used in software to validate integrity of files. Sounds like he bricked his X5!

It seems strange the error is in English yet the location at the bottom of the display is in Chinese. I agree it looks photoshopped.

Then it looks to me like the car is doing a check (and failing) on some software or hardware to ensure it has not been compromised. Some companies have the hardware validate itself for security (i.e. blackberry phones did this which is why they always took so long to boot up even when running android) and very often software is digitally signed and is verified before allowing it to run.

If this is indeed the case, it is normal that the dealer would not ever have seen this kind of error in the past and have no clue how to go about fixing it. They should escalate this to BMW for their experts/engineers to diagnose the component causing the fault.

I have seen it on mine but after restarting the vehicle it goes away. I've seen it twice in the past 5 months.

I may be completely wrong, but my suspicion is that at cold start the master controller enumerates the CAN bus and identifies all installed ECUs and further interrogates those ECUs for something like a firmware checksum. Has the car's firmware been reprogrammed either OTA or by the dealer? If so, it is possible that one or more ECUs failed to program properly, so the expected checksum does not match the actual checksum on the affected ECU(s).

I should have but i didn't bother since nothing was malfunctioning and I didn't know how to replicate the error diagnosis.

That could be. It's also happend on 2 different versions of firmware as well

Your issue is intermittent, which to me suggests that the CAN bus is experiencing a corruption for some reason (ECU talking when it shouldn't, bad cable termination, etc).

Have you reported the issue and taken the vehicle in to the dealer? If I were experiencing this issue, the dealer would have my car until the issue was resolved.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll take it in next time it occurs!

You don't need to wait until it occurs next time . The computer stores all the fault code in the system so they can see the previous occurrence when they diagnose.

First shot at BMW doing remote software updates...and only partial software updating OTA which adds further complication.

Your best bet is there will be teething pain.
