28.3 MPG

I was happy with the mileage I got on our trip of any length first trip with 2020 X5 xLine 40i. We made the trip in Econo mode.

It was about 200 miles, with almost all of it on two-lane secondary back roads. Lots of grades up and down, and intersection slowdowns, and some stop signs and lights.

One of the things I like compared to the 2018 X3M04i we replaced is the tracking of travel statistics. On our X3 if I wanted to know the mileage on a trip, I had to remember reset it at the start of the journey, of course, that never happened. On our X5 there are trip stats are, in effect, reset every day; if the car is shut off over four hours, then the trip stats are reset.

I wasn't too sure how well the X5 would do on a real-world, non-highway trip. But in the end, I was happy that we ended up with the 28.3mpg.

And yes, the X5 is a great car for a road trip!

That’s awesome. The X5 40i does a great job of balancing performance and efficiency. Just a great drivetrain.

we can't crack 22mpg on the 2 road trips of 2.5hrs and 5hrs. eco-mode, light footed and cruise down hill. Not sure if AC blasting and 2 adults and 1 newborn has anything to do with it.
not a big deal, just want to see how efficient our G05 can get. we typically avg 19mpg

On our trip, it was two adults and the outside temp was low 90's with full Sun.

Make sure you are looking at the trip milage. But default you are seeing the milage starting with when you picked up the car. You have to select "Start of trip" in iDrive.

Via iDrive:

"CAR"
"Driving information"
"Trip data"
"Data since"
Select the desired setting:
"Start of trip ( )": the values are automatically reset approx. four hours after the vehicle has come to a standstill.
"Refueling ( )": the values are automatically reset after refueling with a larger quantity of fuel.
"Factory": the values since the time of the factory delivery are displayed.
"Individual ( )": the values since the last manual reset are displayed. The values can be reset at any time.

maybe, we have it set on "refueling". we usually fill up right before the trip so mpg shouldnt be too off

We also got >28mpg on 450 miles road trip and the road was not all flat included some hills. Mostly on eco mode but sometimes on adaptive.

I get about 25 mpg on my 400 mile road trips using eco. I haven’t been all that impressed with the fuel economy on my 40i which is now at 2k miles. I think the coasting in eco said I gained 6 miles on my 400 mile trip. Doesn’t seem like much to me.

On our trip last month I got 25.3mpg for the entire 4,986 mile trip. Most of that was traveling at 78-83mph on highways but of course had quite a bit of slow, city driving at our different destinations. I only will switch to Eco mode when on a highway and the rest of the time usually is spent in Comfort with Sport once and awhile.

X5 is probably my first car where gas mileage can differ so much depending on your style of driving. The car has lots of power so if you are driving thoughtfully and anticipate traffic situation a bit ahead, it can get you into 25 mpg territory in semi-city / hw driving fairly easily. But in exactly the same condition another driver on the same car, who constantly pushes gas pedal without much purpose (or I guess purposefully does so enjoying the fun of dynamic driving) can get 10 mpg without actually getting too far from you in terms of distance driven in the same time span.

That's too bad.

What do you get in your 428?

We were getting about 32+ on our 428xi on similar trips... I think its the extra weight, terrain and the extra heat in AZ?? we will be taking a 600+mile road trip in 2 months, cooler temps, more flat terrain and longer trip, we'll see if that makes a difference.

Wow...that's really great MPG. I did a 700mi road trip and best I could do with 23.4 in adaptive mode mostly on the highway.

My reason for asking is that I have a 2014 328i and a G05 40i. I'm getting much better mileage in the G05 than you. I was just wondering if your N20 mileage was lower than mine too. Your 428 mileage is similar to my 328.

For the weight I'm happy with my G05 mileage. Hopefully, yours does better once you put more miles on it.

The display looks like it's tracking the computer mpg for only the past 1000 miles there, even though the trip computer is logging your entire journey.

One thing I always question - if some of you here are measuring via computer and others truly measuring (gallons/miles at fill ups), you will not be apples-to-apples.

I've never once had a car on board match the real hard math.

I reset odo every fill up, which is every time I get gas in my cars. This is over the last 15+ years and 6 or 7 cars.

I may not do the math at every fill up, but I'm a serial trip odo resetter. I have a standard range in head for what the rough math should look like - any unexplained deviations have provided me a heads up on some maintenance concerns well before a CEL light showed its head.

.

That is just the graph that shows the breakdown by drive modes. The mpg is accurate and is for data bucket chosen, in this case the entire trip. The summary on the left shows the current mpg, data bucket mpg and average mph for the bucket.

No need to do that on the G05 since there is a data bucket that resets when you fill up.

Best I've ever done was ~24.5Mpg all highway, some hills going 85-90mph. I'm sure if I was going 75mph it would've been better. This is in an M Sport 50i making the feat more impressive. I always drive in Adaptive or Sport+, no eco, comfort or anything else unless its situational like a really rough road.

Thanks.

You're saying you've done the math and your factual number is matched by the on board computer in all cases? I'm quite a skeptic and will need to see this for myself.

No, I have never done the math on it and have no need or desire to do so. The "accurate" was referring to the mpg on the display being for the entire trip and not just for the last 1,000 miles being shown on the graph. ie. the trip mpg is equal to the graph mpg.

Just finished 6025 mile trip to Pacific NW from Texas. Average mpg was 26.9. Speed varied from 15-90 on the road (see Beartooth Hwy and 3 national parks for low speed explanation) with lots of stop and go traffic in the big cities (Seattle traffic sux). Altitude varied from sea level to 11,000'. 2019 40i X5

I've seen 28mpg as well, on a trip that was generally 60 mph over 300 miles. The car had about 500 miles on it at the time.
Hopefully it will even get a little better after break-in
