Build help?
Hey everyone, not sure if this is allowed but I'm making the switch and would like some advice. I've scoured the forums but just wanted to clarify a few things.
I drive aggressive and I like a stiffer/no body roll with obviously some room for pot holes/bad roads. I thoroughly enjoy the m50i I drove yesterday but as someone pointed out, its "lose your license fast" which is very true. I am not to be trusted. So, i'll get the x5 40i msport, executive package, etc etc. in terms of suspension, what would provide the LEAST body roll? 1. adaptive M that's standard on msport 2. integral steering + air? 3. can you get the msport with integral steering only (no air)? 4. any other insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

According to the configuration list, yes, you can get integral steering without air. But you can't tell for sure until you sit down with a dealer and they use the dealer's software to configure online. The web-based configurator for 2020 is not available yet but should be available later this month. When it is you can use it to confirm that integral steering is available by itself.
However, with very little effort, you can lose your license with the 40i too. |

i have a 50i,msport with dhp sitting on 21s and it does exactly what you ask for very well. If you dont go the 50i i think you will always look back. Not that fast but can put a smile on your face. Its the sound i like and banging gears.

Out of the options you've outlined for a X5 40i M Sport: Option 1, Adaptive M will offer you the sportiest dampening and handling 40i. It's going to roll but if you rive like a mad man, it's the best you're going to get with a 40i. Option 2, IAS + 2VR - the most comfortable riding 40i with height adjustment. The air suspension does button down in Sport mode. 3. Unfortunately to get IAS, you have to order 2VR or go xLine and order ZOP - Off Road package

With the 50i or M50i you need to be careful, I've run the speedometer through its full range a number of times. The key is doing so in a safe, isolated place on the highway here, no one drives the speed limit so you can let its legs stretch into the lower 90's. If I lived somewhere else I'd probably be in the same boat. I still enjoy the V8 sound and power /trq distribution. Either way, you can't go wrong with a 40i. I do wish they offered the DHP on all trims so everyone could experience the best set up.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Looks like 40I + msport suspension is the way to go.
AndroidRobot You're spot on. The issue here is we have nice highways, but the speed limits are typically 55, some areas of 70 but very congested traffic wise. "never do meth, not even once", well, I did meth, and now im resisting the urge lol. Going 80+ already puts you in felony range (12 months jail) on the majority of areas here in the great state of illinois :/ I know the body roll will be there to some extent without the DHP(I too wish they offered it on every trim) but it seems like the 40i is still leaving people plenty happy with m-suspension. I come from a mercedes GLE which is like being in a wave pool so anything is an upgrade in the suspension department. There's only one 50i DHP in this area (ugly colors otherwise ideal) and while I did notice a difference, now im thinking maybe it was more in my head/excitement at the time, since everyone seems pleased without DHP. One other question, Is the 40i smoother in terms of gear changes compared to the 50i? I've driven the 2017 or 18 x5 40i as a rental in cali, loved it, hoping it's the same as the 2019. I really enjoy the feeling of my wifes dual clutch q5 as it goes through the gears, buttery if you will. I know a lot of this is answered in a test drive but nothing beats long term experience Thanks again! |

BMW's ZF-sourced 8HP transmission is one of the smoothest shifting out there with either engine option. 0-60 times comes approximately 1.1 secs faster than the old F15 35i. I admit to commuting above 75 in my M550i and F15 35i. and blipping into the 3 digit zones on a daily occasion - it's quite intoxicating... LOL
