Each dealer gets a certain number of build slots with a specific week. If he has one coming up, and it's not already sold, he can customize it for a new buyer. Otherwise, the order just sits there waiting for his next build slot.
The dealer can tell you when that is, and once a production number has been assigned, you're in the system, and anyone with access can give you more information. It seems like some of the dealers outside of the US either don't have that many slots, or they're selling lots of these things (it could be a combination of both). For them, many months is not unusual for their wait, and only 2-3 weeks of that is in shipping across the Atlantic. A production number assigned is just like getting a reservation for a future flight or cruise...started means they've actually ordered the necessary parts. Things move very rapidly once the VIN is assigned and body is built. FWIW, mine sat awaiting carrier assignment for over a week...guess there was a shortage of trucks. Similar issue with ships...they aren't leaving on a daily basis. Production scheduled could last for many months if your dealer doesn't have any open slots he can have assigned to your build until way in the future. IOW, there is NO fixed timeline that you can expect things to follow, but once everything comes together, it moves fast. |

wow that's not what I was hoping to hear! Ordered my 40i on 20 NOV. Just hit awaiting transportation today. shipping to dealer in MD. SA saying it will arrive on Saturday. I'll believe it when I see it after hearing how long you were stuck in that status.

Today mine updated to 'In Transit'. Evidently, this was triggered by it's arrival at the Kansas City hub. It is already on a train headed to the Renton, WA hub.
So updated timeline: • Ordered 10/20 • Sched for Prod 10/30, week 49 • Prod began 11/13 • Estimated completion changed 11/21. Was Dec 2, now Nov 25 per automated 800# • Entered assembly line 11/25 beginning of the day • Awaiting carrier assignment 11/25 end of day • Dispatched from factory 11/30 • In Transit 12/6 |

Last week SA and BMW told me 12/22. I called today and they confirmed that was still the case.

Mine's supposed to arrive at the dealer tomorrow according to my CA! Yeah!
The website still says "At the Port". It changed to "In Transit" at one point, but reverted back to "At the Port" and has sat there for a while now (not as long as the initial "In Transit" stage though). |

How do you find out the estimated completion date? The BMW owners website shows my X5 40i switched from production scheduled to production begins just after thanksgiving (and VIN was listed in place of production number), but has been stuck at that status ever since.
EDIT: Oh never mind... I tried calling the 800 number and it told me estimated completion Dec 11th. So only a few days to go, then it is enroute to me. Thanks. Last edited by dkerr; 12-09-2020 at 10:51 AM.. Reason: Found answer myself. |

FYI - for those of you with vehicles on the train to Renton that had an ETA of 12/2, they arrived yesterday (12/9). Mine was released to carrier the same day (tells me it was likely sitting in the yard for a few days and was just finally scanned in) and expected to get picked up today by the truck.
