Also another point to note, my iPhone 11 Pro Max BARELY charges similar to your Note20U. I get like 2% in an hour of tray time. This might be contributing to it staying at normal temps.
It could be but this had happened to my iPhone X as well. I don’t get this kind of message back then because my phone just shut off by itself and the phone itself is hot, like cooking hot . Just like other mention above not to use the charging tray while using the Google map might be the wise move or just simply using the usb C cable to charge the phone.

Not sure about what you guys think but this is what I am going thru right now..........if my car has certain function/feature where I put money in it, I want to use it. What’s the point of buying it if I can’t use it

*With the exception of gesture control........I turn it off completely because is most useless function to me but that’s whole other topic
Oh that's actually the first case I read with another model getting hot besides the 12. Puts a bit of a hole in my theory

As for the apps, yeah I completely follow that logic. I've had times where I've used Waze or Google maps without the wireless charger and my phone will still get hot as all hell. Plus no case to insulate the heat from my hand so you feel it within seconds

Do you mean the lightning symbol on the charging indicator in Apple CarPlay?

Nope, he is referring to the “communication” widget within the iDrive 7. Usually is on the main page(at least for me it is). I’m trying to pay attention to the symbol as well.

let us know if the symbol changes with LED status changes (I don't use the tray anymore.)

Found the widget. Hasn't seen any wireless charging indicator color except for blue or none when the phone is not placed properly in which case the lightning icon in the communication widget disappears altogether.

I got it to go red/orange once when I had my device in one of those cases with the large metal plate for the magnetic phone mount - worked fine upon removing the case, but I can attest to the LED on the tray going to a color other than blue!

Can you try to make it red again and see what the phone widget shows?

I guess when is red, nothing happen on the screen. Only when is charging, the lighting logo will pop up.

*don't mind the music…….is for my little one

Using iPhone X in a case with the NFC digital card sandwiched in between, here are a few observations:

When the phone charge is low and I start charging it on the tray it gets warm to somewhat hot, but if the phone is already charged to begin with then the phone is less warm - understandable, because it's not being charged much. My conclusion is wireless charging on X5 warms up the iPhone more than it needs to be.

I had a few instances when the whole CarPlay was literally frozen, iDrive screen was flickering.

I also notice that my music saved on iPhone (not Apple Music) cuts out randomly for a few milliseconds; it picks back up, but noticeable.

I am not sure if it is my setup, but when CarPlay is being used with the vehicle Siri could not control our HomeKit devices. I'll test this more.

Dealer couldn't find any issues. All in all, Apple CarPlay works most of the time, but not as smooth as I was hoping it would be. There is room for improvement. At least I don't need to connect cable every time.

I was getting an orange LED light on the charging tray due to overheating, and the charging lightning bolt stopped on the display widget - the tray seemed to turn off charging after detecting overheat.

If you have an early G05, get the tray replaced. I have one of the first G05s built and I had issues with that tray not working and overheating. They replaced the tray under warranty and it worked better.

Good to know. What's the key word tho when telling the service rep. because for sure they will come up with some bullshit not to replace it.

How early is considered early tho ? Mine was built May 2019………….

Mine was around October 2018, so.. early I think I just told them that it charged slowly and made my phone hot, so they replaced it really without question.

Yep. iPhone 12 Pro + CarPlay overheats in the charging tray. BMW always behind the mobile phone technology curve. Using USB-C.

iPhone 12 Pro, with a Tech 21 clear case. July 2020 X5.
I have not had any heating problems when using the charging tray. When I pick up the iPhone when I'm leaving the car it does feel warm; however, never hot.

Sounds like BMW is willing to swap out the charging tray. I'll probably request that to be done if I start experiencing problems.

After two 5 hour trips from St. Louis to Chicago (and back) in my 2021 X5 M50i (November/December 2020 build) my iPhone 11 ProMax was just warm but not hot. I did not have any heat related shutdowns or warnings. I also use a wireless charging mat to charge my phone over night without difficulty.

Just another data point.

Some of the heat problems will depend on what you are running on the phone. If you're using it as the navigation source and maybe music source, having the gps on and the fairly high processing power of the constantly moving map data will be drawing much more processing power, and stress the charging circuits keeping the phone warmer or maybe hot versus just sitting there charging and not running any applications on it. Any case will act somewhat like an insulator, making it harder for the phone to cool itself off.

In the last 2 months, my iPhone 12 turned off twice due to overheating, both times very inconveniently - while in traffic in new locations.
Noticed: both times it was on the charging pad and running Google Maps for about 1hr since I left with the temperature inside the car being ~80F or a little less.

While I understand the point about heating due to intensive calculations while charging, well... this is a feature provided by the manufacturer....

1) it's an extremely inefficient 5W wireless charger (can blame them)
2) use the integrated nav system, not a third-party app (can't blame them)

The solution is simple: Wireless charging is a gimmick. Use normal USB-C charging. Faster...much, much faster, more efficient and less heat.

Yeah wireless charging tray and google map (or any gps apps) don't work well together. Now a day, if I know I need to use the google map, I will use the usb c to charge my phone. Other time, I will just use the charging tray of as phone storage and charging.

Bought something like this from Amazon planning to ditch the charging tray forever !!
