As for road trip strategy, my choice after 1 year ownership is this:
- For all highway drive, I use ICE, so sport mode. HVB is just responsible for providing car's electronics, AC, keeping 12V charged. The drain on HVB with these small load will be low. It will last a long time.
- On local traffic, I will switch to EV mode. In all my road trip so far, we haven't need to drive too much in local traffic. If we eventually run down the HVB, car switch to Hybrid and use ICE, so be it.

I hardly use BC mode, and certainly will avoid using ICE to charge HVB. When HVB is being run down, I lose precondition, but it really isn't too bad, it take 5-10min to get to comfortable level, just like old cars. After all, it is another car. I don't want to be the slave of the car, need a special strategy to use it.
I also like sport mode as suspension on regular mode feel a bit too “soft” and sport mode feels much more balanced. Curious is there MPG implication for sport mode on gas engine - is it negligible or is there a significant delta?

I think it is negligible for the ICE part. In other mode, you really cannot get the real ICE MPG. If you consider the combined MPG show in gauge, then sure hybrid MPG will be high than sport MPG.

But this is for 45e, I think we don't have as good of ICE highway MPG as 50e because our gear ratio is shorter on top.

Too bad for some stupid reason, 50e dashboard "Layout" cannot be customized for sports mode; you can only change content in sports mode while you can customize both for hybrid mode. No idea why id8 is implementing such restriction.

Some of it might be maturity...get the fundamentals working without glitches, then, add things as the demand dictates. Time will tell.

I don't care about precondition feature. However, I would like to be able to recharge the battery before uphill when towing. Given that it is only me and two other guys towing with X5, BMW doesn't care about this use case.
