The amount of commission especially on properties in Manhattan are astronomical. These people do very well for themselves. One of my buddy actually does commercial real estate. He might close 1-2 deals a year and make a fortune.

First wife 20 years ago insisted on a $12k ring. I was making $70k per year and had to finance the damn thing. Fast forward 18 years and my income more than 5x that. Told my second wife to pick any ring she wanted. The ring she picked was not a solitaire and cost $2800.

Bling isn't my style and even at work some of the people in $1k suits walk around like big shots while I'm in jeans and a tshirt. Meanwhile they don't even have executive parking or their own office.
