Hi There,

I've had my new X5 45e for about 3 weeks now and I've noticed an issue with the range on electric only. To be honest since I've had it I've only used the electric motor - as my routes are short.

However I see people are getting 35-45miles from a full charge; but with my car the highest I've ever seen it is 32 miles and typically 27 miles after a full charge.

Anyone have any advise on this? My dealer said 27 miles is really good but I think they are talking BS.

Are you in the cold part of the UK or the mild part(ish!)

The range will be lower in the colder weather and are you pre-conditioning the battery?

I have no problem reaching 60km (37miles) when driving on slower local routes. Car is parked inside at night.

>40 miles is possible as well but only because there was a lot of energy regeneration (braking, coasting, etc..) going on and warm(er) temperatures.

Driving at highways speeds (>120kmh, >75mph ) the range is a bit lower. I would say 50km (31 mi).
On a long trip or when I'm going to use the highway, I use the combustion engine for the first few km of my trip. Just to make sure the engine is warm in case I need it. When settled I put cruise control on and switch to electric.

The electrical range indicator is not very accurate. I have seen all kinds of behaviour.
Starting with 55km and after a 10min drive it would still state 55km. Or the opposite. Starting at 65km and after a 2km only 55km left. It depends heavily on your driving style, traffic conditions, weather. etc.

27miles seems a bit low to me.

Thanks for your messages. To be honest I actually find the colder the weather the better the range.

The car is plugged in to a wall charger (3 phase, 32amp - and car set to 16amp max charge). Precondition is on every morning prior to leaving. The car is parked outside but charged always to max at the end of each day.

But I'm based in Brighton (South of UK) so the temps are pretty stable and nothing freezing yet. Average morning temp of 4.5c

All my driving so far is town based and actually is nearly 80% downhill to work and 20% flat. Or the return journey its 80% uphill and 20% flat.

This week i have done only 40 km of range on electric only. I have done 62km previously, usually 50-55km. I think it depends a lot on various variables, my impression is that fast start form stopped position is energy consuming, or using heating or cooling a lot. Maybe your uphill parts take a bit more than usual and cuts the range.

The best range I found is to drive as follows:
- on highways sport mode
- all other roads: adaptive

What was impacting my range by 20-25% is the highway accelerations.

Wouldn't sport mode activate ICE, thus not using much of the battery? In that case obviously one can't talk about range. I'm probably misunderstanding

The colder the weather, the worse the battery range. Due to spending energy on heating etc. Lots of regenerating usually means worse range, as your speed is changing a lot. For best range a steady speed is better (<80 kmh). Coasting is more efficient than regenerating. Use seat heating and turn down temperature for longer range. Use eco mode especially when heating the car.
