Evo IX

Thinking of picking up one of these when the lease ends. What do you guys think. Anyone ever own one? I always wanted one but never got it. They go for like 20k in good condition.

I had one, they're fun but they're built so cheaply. Compare the door frames and the doors themselves to your 3 series and you'll see what I mean. They're great to drive but definitely not built to last.

You run the risk of getting someone else's thoroughly thrashed joy ride that they are walking away from. New, maybe, used? I'd be extra careful.

I'd take the Evo9 over 10 just because 9 has the 4g63.

It is ridiculously easy to make power out of evo9.
The recipe is out there for 300whp, 400whp, 500whp, 600whp all the way upto 1000whp.

handles like go cart, and rush of acceleration is always there.
If you care about looks, then don't get it.
If you plan to DD it and race it a few times, its a great car.

You'll be downgrading look and status wise, but you'll be upgrading to a different level in performance.

If you're gonna mod which I'm sure any evo owner will, get a EvoIX GSR.
You'll be much happier with 5 speed tranny over 6 speed down the road.
RS if you're serious..but they're rare to find.

Haha I'm getting it mainly for the looks and performance. I love the way it looks. As for the gsr. Why is the 5 speed better? I always heard people complain about not having a sixth gear lol

Dude I had Evo 8 and went to a 9 MR. Buy the 9 for sure. The six speed helped alot on the track. I could keep it in third on tight corners and the speed coming out of them was insane. It is like driving a go-cart at times, but I loved my evos. I think you'd be really happy if you're looking at a car around 20k. Just make sure you dont buy someones beat up car. Those things can be easy to demolish.

Evo looks good IMO, but in a toyish way.
6-speed has thicker 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear but 4th and 5th are tiny tiny wheels compared to 5-speed. 4th gear has problems of breaking under heavy use (hot laps) at moderate power level, or drag racing at high power level.
Besides, 6 speed has such close gear ratios that you have to shift into 5th when crossing the 1/4 mile line. In 5 speed, if your engine is built, you can cross it in 4th trapping over 130/140mph which translate into better E.T.

If you plan to leave it stock or near stock and keep it on the street only, MR's 6speed is a good choice.

Which is also the weak link when tracking.

You realize that cars have other features other then the engines right? Like say, a sunroof or a heated seat.

According to that logic you could buy a 1990 Geo and put 5k in it and it would run 11's..So that must not be a downgrade either.

its personal preference i rather have a faster car rather then more options, why don't you tell the guy who forked over 400xxx for a F430 Scuderia that doesn't even have a radio let alone heated seats....

the op doesn't seems to care about the badge like most of you guys do just because it doesn't have a bmw logo doesn't mean its a downgrade...sure the evo doesn't have all the fancy things like the bimmer but there's other things that make a car then the badge.

I had an sti before the 335i and I agree. It is a downgrade in a sense.

Plus you become the center of attention every time you drive by a cop.
