on the other hand, I ordered early November 2020, and after my dealer gave me my production number a few weeks later, I simply assumed a January/February delivery (first bimmer), but he said, "No way! You should have it before the end of the year... just in time for taxes!" (that tax credit was nice...)

BTW, I got another quote to at least say I price compared, and it was $5K for full front and ceramic. It is probably one of the most reknown shops around, but it confirmed that my $3K option is indeed reasonable for the Bay Area.
Hmm my whole 991.2 GT3 cost $6k to wrap in PPF (XPEL). I found PFS to be the best semi-custom cut wrap in the Bay Area unless you got to Premier which is full custom. Most shops do just templates and you can see the lines ugh. Where'd you end up going and how'd it turn out?

New joiner. Noticed many of you are able to see an expected completion date, but I'm not. Which step should I expect to see that? Thx.

You should be able to call the genius help line now to see what build week you are. As for the exact day, you won't be able to get that before the production begins stage. I was only able to get that once on the multiple time I called on both of our cars. They will likely just tell you that it will be done on the Friday of your build week (even though mine was built that Monday).

Newbie to this forum here — wanted to get a gut check on something. I placed a custom order for an 2021 X5 45E on 4/1 and still no production number assigned from the dealer.

Is that expected?

More than likely they don't have an allocation and are just waiting on one. In many instances you get the production number as soon as you put your order in but usually no later than a few days after the order. In your case there is no order, the dealer is hoping to be able to order it in the future. You should probably tell them you need a production number now or you will go to another dealer.

I received my production number exactly a week after I order the car (x5 45 e). The dealership had zero allocations, but somehow they managed to squeeze me through, in the same day the HK sound system went missing! Hehe (but got it back 2 weeks later).

what I've learned through this forum when planning on purchasing is to ask the dealer early if they have an allocation. If not, find another dealer who has one, or if your first dealer is willing to work with the other dealer in obtaining that allocation, then you can continue to work with them as originally planned.

some dealers sell more cars and are given more allocations than others. In 13 years, we never experienced a delay after ordering, so I think ours is one with a lot of allocations.

someone with more experience can clarify the above if I missed or misconstrued any details.

Update: dealer is "working on getting" an allocation as quickly as possible but I've already put down a deposit and I got a pretty favorable deal from my South Florida dealership; worth waiting for allocation (i.e. what's the typical timeline if you have to wait for an allocation before going into production)?

It is up to you as to how soon you need the vehicle. If you don't mind waiting then just give them the time. If they can't trade an allocation with another dealer you will probably have to wait until next month to get the allocation. The date of production will depend on the allocation.

You could always try shopping that deal to other area dealers to see if they can match/beat and they have an allocation.

My dealer didn’t have a X6 allocation when I ordered in mid January, but was able to trade or something, and got a production number in about 4-5 days. After that, it was a month from getting the production number to vehicle delivery.

I ordered my X5 45e on 3/26, received a production number right away. My BMW Garage showed as "Order Received" the same day. On 4/16 status changed to "Scheduled for Production". BMW Genius told me week 19 production date, with delivery late May or early June to the dealer.

That's amazing, congrats! If you don't mind my asking, which Florida dealership did you order through? (We also ended up ordering in Jupiter, FL.)

Ordered my X5 M50i on 3/23; Dealer did not have a specific allocation and was completely up front about it. Sales Manager contacted someone at BMW and was able to get an allocation set aside. Order was accepted and production number assigned on 4/2. Now "Scheduled for Production" with a Week 19 build date. Will be taking delivery at the Performance Center (early June...??)

Could not find a Florida dealer willing to provide a very good discount, so I ended up going with Global Imports in Atlanta. They were/are very easy to work with!

Time from order to delivery

It seems to me that comparing lead times for delivery of an X5 is not particularly useful without knowing distance from the factory. Two orders for identical builds placed on the same day: one destined for Columbia, SC from Spartansburg, SC and one destined for San Francisco. The latter will take several weeks longer than the former to reach the dealer. Right?

Depends on the build week allocation the dealer has for each vehicle.

5/3 - order placed/received
5/10 - scheduled for production

Below are based on my discussion with a BMW Genius:
5/30 - 6/5 (week 23) - production expected to begin
late June / early July - vehicle ready for pickup from dealership

Fwiw mine went through pretty much all the stages in one day because their website sucks. Was in production begins for 2-weeks. The 800# said it'd be done today and low and behold it was regardless of the website.

The car is built in essentially a day, so the website was correct. Production begins means you have a VIN#, not that they actually started assembling your vehicle.
