Stranded as locked out of X5 BEWARE.

My BMW X5 50e 2024 was locked and I approached the vehicle. Opened boot with foot. Put golf bag in boot with car key and phone in the golf bag. Pressed the boot closure and the boot locked. Could not open vehicle as key and phone in Car. Had numerous vehicles with keyless entry and none of them would lock when the key was in the vehicle….only had the car 4 weeks from new.
Had to get home by cab and get spare. Fortunately was only 20 minutes from home. Could have been a nightmare if on weekend away.
Called BMW and they told me they have never experienced this before ? Anyone else had the same problem?

Yes, my key fob was in the golf bag as well, but I had my phone in my pocket. Used the BMW app to unlock it.

Yes my 2024 will lock with the fob inside all the time, I have no idea why they designed it this way

Well, doing it by mistake might be easy. But try to do it on purpose and you will see that it’s not that trivial!

I was polishing mine yesterday. I got tired of it locking and unlocking as I moved around the garage with my phone in my pocket so I unlocked it and put the fob on the console, thinking that would force it to stay unlocked. It did not, the car locked as soon as I walked away with the fob inside. I guess it prioritizes the phone over the fob then?

I would guess something about the golf bag masked the signal from the key to the car.

If you open the boot with foot, the car doesn't unlock - only the boot is unlocked and opened. And when you close the boot with the car locked, the boot will also lock.

So, technically the car didn't lock with the key fob inside because it was never even unlocked ;-)

That's weird, cause i had the same thing happen to me last week, but when i pressed trunk close button, it kept on beeping and would not close. At first i thought it was the bag sticking out and hitting the edge of the door trunk, but it turns out i had my key in my golf bag and would not lock. So mine worked as it's supposed to be. Strange that yours locked you out.

I had something kinda similar occur. The car was on and I got out of the car to ask someone to get my son. When I went to open the door to go back into the drivers seat, the car was locked. I had to open the boot and ninja style into the backseat moving onto the drivers seat. Scared me that I had to go through the boot.

That's messed up, my 2021 JGC SRT will not lock if keys are inside...I just tried locking my 2023 with keys inside and it would not let me. The door lock, nor the rear lock allowed me to lock the car. Here's an interesting one, and I am sure no one would do this, cant think a reason why, but I left a set of keys inside and used the spare one to lock all doors and it did lock.

There's a setting for what doors open on unlock. Likely your car was locked, only the hatch unlocked when you opened it. With the keys in golf bag, surrounded by metal tubes, it was likely in a significantly reduced rf state, the clubs acting like a partial faraday cage.

This is assuming you pressed the hatch close button, not the close and lock button.

Ianw sucks that it happened. no vehicle should lock if the key fob is anywhere inside it

1) maybe keep the key card on your person as a backup? (I keep mine in my wallet)
2) have BMW Connected Call Center phone number in your wallet to remote unlock your vehicle (hopefully someone can let you borrow their phone to do so)

Car will NOT lock itself when it detects signal of key inside at the time you push the lock button. Almost all modern car follows such logic.

However, sometimes car could lose connection with keys. It is an inherent risk of wireless communication; technology can reduce the chance of it but the risk is never zero. This is especially true when you put the key / phone / wireless device next to large chunk of solid material, where signal is blocked.

So, it is a feature almost all cars have, but you should never depend on it.

iWatch works great for avoiding this scenario.

My car locks with fob inside, this happens all the time. The locking system on the X5 leaves a lot to be desired if top and bottom boot hatch is open and you walk away from car with key in pocket the doors lock with the boot open, why on earth would you want this to happen. You are correct that nearly all modern cars follow the logic of not locking with key inside but X5 doesn't.

Stuff happens. Since I use digital key all the time, I always keep the nfc card in my wallet for backup.

If the fob is in the car could you not open the hatch with your foot?

if the vehicle can be opened this way by the foot, what logic is different that it couldn't be opened by any other unlocking method? (touch door handle, touch tailgate handle, etc)

Nothing worse than locking the keys in the car.

Maybe the battery in the fob was getting weak and wasn't transmitting a strong signal?

Same thing happened to my wife’s 2024 X6. Her phone and wallet with the key card was in the vehicle and she was locked out. She borrowed a coworker’s phone and called me and I had to come to her with they fob.

instead of going to her,
1) you could've remotely unlocked the vehicle from the MyBMW app on your phone
2) you could've called the BMW Connected Call Center and have them remotely unlock her vehicle, or she could've called from her coworker's phone if she had the number

I never carry a fob and use my phone as a key. An issue to be aware of is that if you close the door and it doesn't fully close, the phone won't unlock it (I have the car set to lock after a short time), even if you go into the app and press unlock. The only way to unlock the vehicle if you don't have a fob handy is to push the door so it is fully closed, then the phone will unlock it.
