Same here. In my case I ran out of warranty and I don’t think the upgrade is anything substantial.

Any update on this, I have a m340i and getting the same 038400 code for preconditions not met, I can clear it but it comes back, battery voltage is perfect and all other preconditions are met.

Here is one totally non scientific suggestion. We know we need to be connected to the car via WiFi and Bluetooth. My Bluetooth is always connected so I’m secondary connecting my Wi-Fi.

So after a month of being ready to upgrade with over 1,000 miles of driving and nothing happening - I switched the order. Turned WIfi and Bluetooth off in my phone. Then connected WiFi to the car first and the. Bluetooth - what do you know it finally worked.

Could be just luck and the timing was right. You might try this to see if it helps anyone else.

as an addendum to the above, that is the connection sequence with CarPlay: wifi first then bluetooth (for those with iPhones, obviously) which could explain my 100% success rate with all available OTA upgrades for which I’ve received notification since 2021

CarPlay is the opposite, it connects by Bluetooth first and then CarPlay takes care of making the WiFi connection.

that's not what i've observed. i've watched the icons in the iPhone Control Center and noticed the wifi icon greys out before "CarPlay" shows in the upper left of the control display.

I'm going by how the connection is established and the phone set up. Bluetooth is the method used for pairing the phone to the vehicle. It uses Bluetooth and then CarPlay initiates the WiFi connection. Given that Bluetooth is the method for connecting a phone to the vehicle I would imagine that it is always first.

We purchased a used 2020 X5 from a BMW dealer in June 2023. Come to find out that the installed software was 07/2019.63. The dealer had sold the vehicle originally and serviced it. No idea why it never got any updates. Don't trust the dealership and they are 2 hours away.

I downloaded the update to 11/2019.70 which was the only version offered to me. But it won't install. I have the message that Preparations for the upgrade to version 11/2019.70 have been completed. That I will be notified when the upgrade can be installed. But after three weeks, I have not ever gotten that message. How can I either force the installation or get whatever is holding it back unstuck?

I've seen this one twice now and it even says to wait 30 minutes. I come back 30 minutes later and it's like nothing ever happened. I think the car is just screwing with me at this point.

Ive also given up. I also get 038400 code which comes back if deleted. I am out of warranty. And not going to pay for them to sort it out. Be nice if someone found a way.

This post with 5 pages and increasing is a testament to how bad this problem is and the inability to get it done from the dealer for free is bad, We should start an email campaign and send email to the CEO BMW north america , to bring this to his attention, this subpar execution cannot be tolerated from a brand like BMW.

I have already sent a strongly worded email to him, I suggest if more people do it, they will do something about it.

I ended up taking it to the dealer since I had a little warranty left.

They confirmed the error code mentioned earlier and stated it was battery charge related. They put out on a charger over night and the update applied.

I checked the battery each time it alerted that it was ready and then 30 minutes later after cool down. Each time the battery was 85% or higher.

Whatever, it's installed now. Haven't noticed much of a difference.

My update still fails to complete.. i have the battery fully charged with at trickle. i can start off the upgrade when it lets me.. i've left the key in the car before.. comes back and it says it cannot be installed at this time.

I've been successful in getting the software install to kick off by manually pushing the key up against the key sensor on the right side of the steering column when i shut off my car. Its hit or miss but i've been able to get to kick off more often doing this than not. My problem is it won't install once it starts.

I bet they can pull a code as to why it doesn’t want to complete the install. that being said, 1) keeping the key in the vehicle isn’t necessary cuz once started, it says you can leave and lock the vehicle which you shouldn’t do with the key inside. 2) holding the key up to the steering column sensor isn’t part of the install process (I’ve never had to do that, and I’ve performed 4 successful upgrades since 2021) , so it could be coincidental unless you have preexisting key recognition issues which is a separate problem
