I doubt BMW manufactures any single component in the motor itself that they assemble in their factories. Bearing tolerances are so tight in motors today there's not much room for error. This was likely a QC issue at the bearing manf. they didn't catch.

Unlikely BMW manufacturers the bearings themselves. The thin "shell" bearings.

Engine block, bearing caps and crankshaft are often machined in the engine assembly plant. I know with 100% certainty that some automakers do this, not sure about BMW.

This means the engine is in fact "manufactured" or "produced" or "made" in the engine assembly factory, by virtue of the boring and grinding (metal removing or "machining") operations on site.

Bearing shells are not machined during assembly.

For engines that come from their own engine factories, BMW is responsible for the complete engine design and manufacture, and specification of all subcomponents, such as bearing shells.

Bummer. I would not be happy if my new car had to have an engine replaced by a dealer. Nothing is ever as good as factory fresh.

Wonder why only G and not F, I was under the impression it was still the same generation B48 in the G-cars. (?)

EDIT: I see it says B48D and B48C, there's been a technical update then I guess. Did they switch out that part, and end up making it worse than the original one?

I think it's obvious that bearings in M cars were abused by owners where this is wearing under normal use.

What build dates/VINs are actually affected? That's the key guys.

Not all vehicles. If affected you will be notified.
How do you know this?

Why all this madness and no a single credible source posting an affected VIN/Build date range?

Attached is the corresponding note to the dealerships. Some folks in Germany have contacted their dealers and this internal memo seems legit.

It primarily refers to a delivery stop of not yet delivered cars. Delivered cars are to be called in for service. So, I presume you will get contacted if your car has already been delivered and is impacted.

But I agree, unless there is a documented case or clarity how many cars might be impacted, no need to get nervous.

Sounds like a recent batch of produced cars.

Doesn't seem like it's a huge issue in terms of number of VIN's affected. Recall/stop delivery was initiated some time at the beginning of October and at that time, only 23 Canadian G20 VIN's were affected in all of Canada which is relative low considering the number of G20's that have been sold and are currently available in stock.

Q6. How will my vehicle be repaired?
The engine will be replaced for free and will take several hours.
Of course, your service advisor will just pull a new one off the shelf from right next to the pile of diesel EGR coolers. Wait...what!?

Did a quick search and didn’t see anything that the warranty has been extended. Will talk to my local dealers to verify this.
