In my experience with all BMW I had, mpg improved by about 500-800 mile mark and gotten to its best by about 5k on odometer.
Your mileage may vary depending how you drive, LOL Enjoy your rides |

Everyone using high octane (89 versus 87) premium? Here in Texas it costs about 26% more than regular aka 85 octane.
Have read that anything that is not what's recommended by the manufacturer who has tuned the car for that octane can be harmful. |

IIRC the BMW octane recommendation is based on RON. We use AKI in the USA. The AKI is ~5 octane lower depending on RON and MON. So doesn't that mean we don't really need the highest octane USA premium ??

BMW recommends 91 octane in the US, with a minimum of 89. That's using the AK (guess it wasn't a good day).

I agree with not running regular fuel in the X5, but when it is your daily driver, I think it is crazy to not care about fuel economy and cracks me up whenever I say somebody say that.
If it is an $80k+ SUV then you are getting the bigger engine and with the 40i, which majority will get, it is an every day driver and I don't care what cost, it must have decent mpg. No way is my everday driver going to get 11 mpg to 20 mpg, when both my wife and I put on 15,000 miles a year. Just does not make sense, at least to me. I guess I can see if someone does not care about mpg, if it is not their primary car and drive low mileage, but even then I would not like it. |

A 50i can certainly cost $80k easily with only a few options so I don't find that price out of the ordinary, perhaps I should take a poll of MSRP for the X5's here. edit: at $3/gallon, 20mpg I'd pay $2250 ($187.5/month) for 15000 miles a year, at 15mpg I'd pay $3000 ($250/month) a year that's trivial when you think about it

I've driven just over 1200mi on my 40i since mid November. I get ~14mpg in city (4mi commute each way mostly in traffic). On my drive 200mi drive on US I35 to visit my extended family I got ~23mpg.

I haven't reset mine since I bought it. I had 850 miles on her now. It shows 18.6mpg which is a combination of city and highway. Also a bit of sitting there with engine on as I played with idrive 7 and the settings. I had an 08 x5 4.8 before as my winter car. Even 18.6 kicks the crap out of what I got in that car. So I'm happy. I do miss the steering and the v8 rumble of that car though.

Does anybody still check MPG the old fashioned way? You know, fill it up, set the trip odometer, drive until you need gas again, fill it up, note the number of gallons pumped, note the miles on the trip meter, and finally divide the number of miles driven by the number of gallons pumped? Wow, I'm tired just typing that!
I still do just as a force of habit. I'm sure the on board computer is more accurate than my in the head math calculation but I do it anyway. My New Year resolution is to stop doing that. |

I've always wondered if the car computer matches the "real" MPG. It's been great reading your posts on the G05. I've learned a lot. Can't wait to pick mine up in Spartanburg. Happy New Year! |

I love it. The reason why folks like us are driving and paying cash for pricey cars is we make it a daily choice not to nickel and dime ourselves to death. I could pay cash for a Maserati, doesn't mean I don't pinch pennies though. |
