I would say if the car is that sensitive to the gas brand, it is still a problem tho. 50e is supposed to be able to take 87 too

There is no question that the sound is engine knocking. This was verified by my BMW dealer's technician, a BMW-NA test engineer, and an independent auto mechanic.

The problem is that the test engineer is claiming that the knocking/pinging is acceptable ("car operating as designed"). The noise isn't extremely loud, but it is very noticeable during acceleration, and not normal. The CEL is not on btw. The dealer's tech told me (verbally of course—would never put it in writing) that the test engineer acknowledged "an ignition timing problem."

Which is why they refuse to fix the car.

I was curious if other owners of the 2024 model were having a similar issue, as I am aware that there were some changes made to the engine (as people on the forum pointed out, and also the dealer's technician). I wonder if BMW is concerned they have a bigger problem on their hands than just me.

Anyway, after multiple exchanges, my case was escalated to a new customer service area at BMW-NA. We'll see what happens. But either way: a brand new BMW engine has a problem, and they should have honored their warranty from the beginning.

Again, thanks for everyone's input.
Sounds like a cop out with the service tech but they do have to follow BMW spec guidelines for tolerance, etc. That said the best premium we can get here in the Phoenix area is 92 octane and with about 1900 miles and several tanks of gas the wife's LCI 40i has never pinged once.

Just another thought. Is the air to water intercooler operating correctly? Hot intake air can be another reason for knocking.

I will be very surprised if bmw will state in service record, saying ping and knock are within normal operation behavior.

Same problem

I am having the same rattle / tap occurring on my 2024 BMW X6. Check engine light came on after 3 weeks of purchasing the vehicle brand new with knock sensor codes…. Went out on their own but started hearing the tap / rattle at low and slow acceleration or going up a hill really slow. It sounds like a rocker noise or wrist pin except it doesn’t do it all the time. Car now has 8000 miles and figured eventually could be something that needs to be broken-in because its a new car but still have the same issue. If someone has a resolution please post as I k know if I take it to BmW I will get charged for them to tell me its normal.

Take it to the dealer. You are under warranty and they won't charge you to diagnose it. Let us know what they say.

I didn’t see it mentioned here, but maybe the problem with this car was the switchable rocker arm recall. My car didn’t make any noises like the OP described, but I did get this recall notice in the mail and had it done by my dealership. For me, there was no difference before vs after getting the parts replaced.

Here’s a discussion on Reddit about it:
