G05 Tartufo Merino Leather Question

Earlier MY G05 owners that have kids/dogs can you share how the merino leather has held up? Do you see any color transfer from jeans? What kind of cleaning regiment have you done? Lastly, the side bolster where you enter and exit the vehicle, how are those holding up?

Tempted to cancel my order and purchase one off a lot. However, the inventory X5 has Tartufo leather, where as my build has sensafin. I selected sensafin due to durability concerns with the merino leather. From what I have gathered and given my situation sensafin seems to be the safer choice?

Insight would be appreciated to see if my concerns are warranted or if the durability will be similar to sensafin. TIA

I went the other way and changed up from fake leather Sensafin to Tartufo Merino and am very happy with it. I just figured any vehicle costing $100K+ should come with real leather seats. My only real regret is that I wanted Cognac, not Tartufo and Cognac is not offered in real leather.?

I have the cognac sensafin on the build X5, and it is a great color IMO. The Tartufo is also a great color.

Just to give an idea on merino durability, I previously owned a G80 M3 with Silverstone full merino leather. It was a daily driver and I had two little ones in the backseat almost daily. I had no issues with the leather holding up and it was easy to maintain. Only had the car two years so can’t speak to long term durability beyond that but it still looked good the day I sold it. I’ve opted for the extended Tartufo merino leather on my incoming X5 and don’t anticipate any issues there either.

Kids & dogs? I'd get the Sensafin. Its durable and easy to clean from muddy paws, to toddler vomit...or their footprints on the back of the front seats!

Adults & older teens that know better...I wouldn't worry about getting Merino leather...as long as the teens weren't into wearing sharp objects on their clothing that could gouge the leather.

Both are relatively durable and both can get color transfer from jeans. It's just how you want to waste money.

I’ve had no issues with BMW leather either in 21 X3 M40i Cognac or 135i ivory/black. Just one time with tan color trim peeling in a E36 coupe drivers’s sport seat bolster. The catch was keeping the leather moisturized. I’ve not owned a BMW model with synthetic leather yet.

In my experience, dye transfer from denim is an inevitability. But, I've had great success with being able to easily remove it using Colourlock leather products.

The mild leather cleaner coupled with the leather protector product is an outstanding combination. Available on Amazon.

The X3 and 135i had Vernasca leather which is definitely different than Merino. However I still agree with you, both kinds have held up fine during my ownership experiences.

No blue jean transfer on my X5 with cognac sensafin. Love the sensafin, it grips you better than leather for spirited driving!

These are a few photos from my post when I announced I’d be selling my G11 7-series

These were Ivory Merino seats after 2 years of ownership and around 30k miles. I experienced absolutely no issues due to damage or color transfer. I wore jeans very very often. Seats were cleaned sporadically, it’s worth to mention

I agree with one of the above posts - in a vehicle this expensive I can’t imagine getting fake leather, no matter how nice it feels or how well it imitates the real thing. But it’s my own preference and I can accept others would choose differently

How many dogs and how many little kids and all the equipment required to carry them along did this lovely ivory Merino leather have to endure?

From one to three kids in the back (5, 10 and 15 yrs old; the youngest in a kid seat), zero dogs

But I have strict „zero food or drink” policy. Have observed that since my very first car many, many years ago. Only exception is coffee for my and wifey, or water for the kids. Nothing sugary or crunchy allowed 🤣

I believe the seating surface on Merino with vented seats are either Sensafin or Vernasca. That is how it was pre LCI - only the sides are Merino. So durability should be similar between Sensafin and merino for the most part. Merino has a coating that makes it quite durable IMHO. My friend has a 2019 with ivory merino and it looks new! Granted it is very lightly used since he lives overseas and it is a car parked for when he visits the US. But I do drive it 20-30% of the time and put around 3-4K miles a year for the last 4 years and have a kid and taken it on a few trips to the beach and skiing….

Absolutely agree every word. The ease of maintenance becomes so valuable with kids, that I will sure give a bit of comfort of real leather. Yes, I do think once leather is wear in a bit, it is more comfortable, but small difference.

Yes, both Cognac or Tartufo will get jeans color after a hot summer

^ This.

The perforated portions are Sensafin or Vernasca, even with the Merino leather option.

I'd get the tartufo car, provided it has all the options you want, and not stress about it!

I am by no means disagreeing with you. In reviewing this topic it does seem like the seat/perf sections are not merino. However, I asked the CA yesterday and he was adamant that they were full merino 🤔. Pretty sure that was nothing more than sales speak 😂.
