I found that the tailgate will not open, have to pull out phone, unlock the screen, load the wallet, select the key and then press the hatch release button. Maybe there's a setting I need to change for unlock all doors and hatch when unlocking the car? This is so much more of a process than just using the keyfob to get the hatch open.

not sure your idrive supports this (8.5 possibly?)

That option is not available, at least in the US, with the version of 8.5 the are installing.

Edit: Just read a thread where an X7 with factory installed 8.5 has it, waiting on details of the version number.

I actually haven’t used the card other than to test it, and it does work fine also.

I’ve got complete confidence in the system. That said sometimes it takes more than one try for whatever reason, and sometimes it works a little faster or slower for whatever reason. Also, it can take a minute to link to the user profile (sometimes). All minor “glitches” vs the convenience of not carrying a key or phone for short trips, or whatever.
That’s interesting. I’ve being using my Apple watch (with no phone, card, or fob with me) and the car unlocks when I walk up to it and I can click the start button to drive off

The watch must be unlocked though before all of that can happen though.

I’ve never had to hold the phone over the wireless charging tray.

On LCI (and cars with Digital Key Plus) you don’t have to place the phone/watch on the tray. It’s based on Bluetooth and UWB, v/s the old digital key which is based on NFC.

After an initial issue that my wife had — which I think was actually user error — it has been flawless for us with recent model iPhones and Apple Watches. My new phone comes tomorrow so I wonder if the transition will be seamless. But I digress — I actually think Digital Car Key is one of the most useful, seemlessly integrated technology tools the car has. It is definitely not a gimmick. I’d be disappointed to not be able to have it in a future car.

typo there mojoJJ there’s no “plus” in pre-LCI Digital Key

apw2607 to clarify further:
models 2019-2023 are “pre-LCI” and come with Digital Key that uses NFC. users have to physically place devices near the sensors to work

models 2024+ are “LCI” and come with Digital Key PLUS that uses UWB. users don’t have to physically place devices near any sensors because it uses Comfort Access proximity sensors

I have been using only my iPhone and watch only since picking up the X5 in June. No complete failures.. just some minor nuisances. After being parked for days, it sometimes doesn't unlock on approach and it takes a couple of pulls of the door handle to wake it up and unlock. Also, a few times it has error messages 'no key present' when trying to start, but a second press always works. I had to go find a key fob when a took it to the dealer for service earlier in the week. I came from a Tesla, so I was use to using the phone only as I never had a key fob with it.

If you leave your phone in the car when you go to the gym, shopping, etc. can someone just walk up and unlock your car?

By the way, got my 15 Pro Max today. Was pleasantly surprised how relatively simple it was to switch the digital key from my old phone to my new. Not 100% seamless. But not too difficult and decent prompts in the app.

The one original snag I had was that I wasn’t logged into my profile in the car. Once I was properly logged in and had the two fobs on me, it was pretty quick and painless.

If your phone is the only key on you, the car won’t lock if you leave it inside. In that case it’s like leaving the keys in your unlocked car, anyone can steal it.

I’m not too sure what heppens when you have the phone and a fob on you and you leave the phone in the car and take the keys with you. Does the car still lock as you walk away with the fob in your pocket? Can you force lock the car with the key from outside?

Yeah, I leave the phone in the car and take the fob with me. The fob works for locking/unlocking when the phone is in the car. When I go to the gym, I leave my phone in the car and I'm wondering if that's a no-no.

Mine just came too. Do I just need to sit in the car with the new phone and two key fobs to transfer the digital key over?

Yes......I've left my phone in the car and when the fob is in my pocket the car locks when I walk away.

Yes, so it seems. That’s what the app walked me through during transfer of the primary digital key. Make sure you are signed into your car on your account.

But can someone else unlock the car if your phone is in there?

1 - I always carry the fob. 2 - I never use the fob.

There are reasons to carry the fob. If the car needs to be towed, or if left with a valet, one does want a key available.

Are you sure that the phone takes precedence over the fob? It could be that the fob is being used to open/start the vehicle if you have it in your pocket.
