For some reason the oversized grills worked better on the vintage BMWs these modern versions are calling back to:
There is a reason why the "Garmisch" never came to fruition: Until now.

I think the angry squirrel snout may be permanent (all electric, production scheduled late 2021):

My initial first impression isn't good.
Don't like the D pillar design. The slope on the dash gives an illusion of sliding off! There are way better front and rear designs out there. Why electric/hybrid vehicles needs to have blue accents, blue seat belts, blue badge.... Who is supplying the batteries? Samsung? More burnt cars?

If they are doing that grill on the iX, it makes sense that they would leave the X5 grill alone to help distinguish the new model

Info not currently available on the battery supplier but BMW designed the scalable and modular power unit... it's in the press release:
The fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology – which encompasses two electric motors, the power electronics, the charging technology and the high-voltage battery – delivers improved efficiency and performance. The power unit developed by the BMW Group and manufactured sustainably without the use of rare earth raw materials will, by the most recent calculations, develop an output of around 500 hp. That will be enough to propel the BMW iX from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 5.0 seconds.

Given the recent 5er LCI, I'm forecasting X5 LCI:
- interior is mostly going to stay unchanged for LCI, maybe new trims - options, perhaps acoustic glass, soft closing doors make a come back - exterior, revised and more prominent xLine front/rear bumpers, same with M Sport front/rear though minor, revised headlight housings, taillights, new wheel options I doubt they change the grill, they may revise the slats or offer illuminated X5 grill before model EOL.

I can see the next gen grill getting more along this shape though. Not sure if I like it would have to see what final product rolls out but wouldn't surprise me

I'm hoping we'll be able to uncover BMW's LCI design language philosophy for their SUVs based on the upcoming X3 LCI. After all, the sedans' LCIs seem pretty similar. That said, it does matter who the designer is, and I hope that the X3 LCI design wasn't finalized by the guy (Jozef Kaban) who did the 5er LCI design. Otherwise, we'd actually have to wait to see the X5 LCI in the flesh as that particular designer already left BMW. The current X5 looks very decent already so I hope not too much is changed.

bmw do their ugly design on some niche cars like ix etc. 5 series m5 x3 x5 etc are their bread and butter attracting repeat custom di don't think they will gamble in those segments.
btw 4 series snd m4 is a flop. Dealers I spoke to confirmed order volumes for those much lesser than anticipated. |

My two personal favorite BMW are the E39 M5 and the E46 M3. I've owned several of both. The design was conservative but distinctive, the power was ample, the vehicles themselves were analog enough to be true driver's cars but digital enough to keep them paint side up and relatively current today. These two were the last of the golden era and will forever have a place in my heart.
