Automatic Map Update
Hey everyone — need help sorting out automatic updates with my 2020 X5 40i. I haven’t received a map update for my home region (NJ) since 2020-4 (nor system updated since 7/2021, but that’s a different story). I dropped my car at the dealership this morning and they called me to quote me a price to update the maps. I explained to them I‘m not paying for new maps and I should be getting new maps downloaded, which they claim to never have heard of. I used the BMW app to pull up my account and sure enough, Automatic Map Update says “Subscribed until 01/29/2024.” They told me there is nothing they can do about that as they have nothing to do with BMW connected services.
I’m at a loss that a BMW dealership can’t help me. Any advice? Should I contact BMW corporate directly? Last edited by Ribnet; 08-24-2022 at 02:56 PM.. |

While the auto update should happen automatically, you can go into the menu and ask it to check for updates. Also, go log into your account on the web and verify that NJ is your home region. It won't update an out of region section, so yours could be set to a different one. I would much prefer at least the option to update the entire area (which in the USA would encompass USA and parts of Canada...I'm not sure about Mexico), but it only lets you update your home region, and to get another area, you have to change that AND drive in it for it to be triggered.
If that doesn't get you the updates, that's a warranty issue, and a competent dealer should fix it for you. |

Thanks for the reply! I have done both of those things. I even tried changing my region, driving around for a few days, and then changing back.
I’m going to contact BMW NA and see if they have anything to say. I suspect it’s going to kick back to the dealer at which point I’m going to push on them to fix this. |

Unfortunately a dealer will generally not update the maps for free since they are supposed to be done through Connected Services. I would suggest calling Connected Drive and see if you can get them to either force an update (not heard of them being able to do that) or have them contact your dealer in order to approve having him do the update. You shouldn't have to do that though since your dealer should handle this. If you haven't already, speak to the service manager/director and let him know what is going on.
You should be at 2022-02, not sure if 03 has been released, to be current.

Thanks for the suggestions and the screenshots. I’m calling Connected Services in the morning and then the service director right after (unless Connected Services takes this up).
A little annoyed at the lack of service — I agree, they should deal with Connected Services and bring me in if necessary, not kick it back to me. Plus, my car is scheduled to be ready tomorrow. Quote:

Just for clarification, there are two possible Map updates. The first is the actual "Road Map NORTH AMERICA Live" map which is the version of the base map software. my 2020 X7 came with 2019-2. I tried to get my dealer to update this but they said this is not part of the map update subscription and it would cost me $400.00 if I wanted them to update it for me.
The second, and more relevant, map update is the regional map update. In my case it's ID, MT, OR, WA, WY. This is the map that gets updated "Over the Air" and is the subscription map that comes with the car for 3 years. When that expires we will have to pay to keep getting those map updates. In my screen shot you can see that my regional map update is showing 2021-3. However, I took the picture in January of 22. Since then it's been updated and now shows 2022-3. This map gets updated regularly. I believe at least twice per year. |

2022-3 update should be out by now. I got the notification on iDrive stating that it was updated to 2022-3 a few days ago.

It will even reboot it while you are using it if you click to do it, it is quick though.

Is there anyway to receive map updates for a region the car is not physically in? I'm going to be driving from east to west and have no confidence the car will immediately get the latest map as I enter a new region. (My 45e only has the minimal neutered cellular & wifi connectivity)

I have never heard of the minimal neutered cell & wifi, what are you referring to? You mean the standard cell connection? If so, that will work just fine as designed.

First your in the X5 forum. Secondly, the entire map itself does not update, only the region you have selected in ConnectedDrive (NOT iDrive). Third you'll only receive the updates when BMW releases them. As it states, you MAY receive up to 4 updates in year, meaning map updates are not guaranteed.

The base map for the USA vehicles usually does not get updated. An update has two parts:
- points of interest - this changes much more often than actual roads as businesses open/close/move - roadways including things like grades, one-way streets, speed limits, etc. |
