Warranty Cost Thread?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi All,

I am purchasing my fifth BMW but this time thinking about an extended warranty. I recently sold my 5 series, and am moving into an X5. The car I am purchasing is a 2019 X5 with 40,000 miles. It is a weird build- it has M Sport, Luxury Seating, Premium Package, but not Executive or Parking assist.

I am looking to buy a 5 year / 60 k mile warranty either powertrain only (primarily concerned with transfer case) or bumper to bumper. The dealer quotes me over 8k for a bumper to bumper and over 6k for a powertrain.

Wondering what quotes y'all have gotten and through what warranty companies? I did reach out to Christine Newman and Steve Thomas BMW, that I saw on this forum.

Any data points would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

What is the ballpark cost for these warranties anyways? Is 6-8k typical, or is that a way inflated price?

While I would not get one, I shopped around a few years ago for pricing and these three were the lowest and they continue to offer great pricing.

Daniel Kim at dkim@saffordauto.com, Jeff Steel at jeff.steel@passportauto.com and Christine from GOLFFRR 's place at vipfinance@bmwofcamarillo.com

I have NEVER purchased a warranty before actually, and I have owned 2 BMW's before this and knock on wood I have had great luck and wouldn't have needed them. I am super nervous for the V8 especially with the transfer case issues, and if I can get one for 3500 or under I may take the risk

With some recent changes I would think you may almost double that, depending on yrs/mileage/deductible but let us know. I saw a quote the other day for an X7 and it was $14,000.

WOW! That is crazy! Geez. I have enough to feel comfortable making repairs so maybe I Do take the gamble. I didn't want a V8 but the deal was way better than any of the 40i's as the car was sitting for a while (they weren't budging on price). I got an very aggressive deal.

Car is going to BMW today to get fully checked out so fingers crossed it passes and no issues!

Warranties will vary in price depending on your specific situation. Miles, time frame, model etc..

the longer you wait the higher the price will be. If you would like to get a quote on a warranty we do discount them for forum members. It can take a little time to get a reply but you can speed it along with messaging me your email address and I can ping them and get you dialed in by the end of the day most of the time

vipfinance@bmwofcamarillo.com let them know your vin number, miles, and what you are looking to get a quote on.

Since you mentioned it and it seems to be worrying you, I would suggest you get the transfer case fluid changed and then you should be a long way to having no issues, not saying you would have one. It may be the the $400-$600 to do so.

Yep that will 100% be done! Its at BMW right now getting checked, and if it passes inspection I am going to ask that they do the Fluid Change (as long as it's priced similar to my local dealer, if not I'll drive it back to Kansas City and get it done here).

Car was always serviced at BMW and tires were changed all 4 at a time so hoping it will be OK

I'm going to change my recommendation posts to use this email address. Is it still going to Christine or should I use something general such as Staff?

It's Christine, Will, and Jimmy Miller. but the email address is a group so its in theory going to help with reply speed but still tough which is why I try to have whoever is waiting to ping me so I can follow up and usually get them dialed in by end of the day

it all depends on your specific situation. Best to get a quote and go from there. Depends on miles, model, and plan.

any issues hearing back from them, just buzz me your email address and I can follow up for you no problem.

If the car you are buying has 40K and the extended warranty is for 60K; does that mean your warranty is for 20K miles? They want to jam you for $8,000?

I only believe in CPO warranties with that comes unlimited miles. Peace of mind on purchasing a pre-owned vehicle.

Good luck

The BMW extended warranty for my X5M was quite pricey at $7-8k (CPO wrap). Worked out to nearly $4k/yr for 2 years after CPO coverage ended. (I am aware it adds some coverage during that CPO year as well).

For less money I went with a Fidelity platinum plan - 7 years, 70k additional miles.

Great idea, there's a lot of research information on the forum on the topic of warranties. That's how I got mine...lots of folks with some great recommendations that are actually spot on.

For the BMW plans, the mileage is from when the vehicle is first put into service so in your example it would only be for 20k miles.

For clarity, the original post mentions drive train or bumper to bumper warranty plans. While BMW's Platinum plan covers more than the CPO plan, it is not bumper to bumper and does exclude items.

Yeah 8 grand for only 20,000 miles of coverage seems absurd to me. If that's what he's truly looking at or getting. But in the end it's what makes you feel comfortable with/peace of mind.
