Loaner and Service Noob -- Best practices questions

Hi. I'm about to have my 50e picked up for knee airbag recall service. I have never had a car that is under factor warranty, so a few questions for those who have experience dealing with BMW service, loaners, etc.

1. Do you put your car into valet mode when dropping it off (or having it picked up) for service? Does valet mode potentially stand in the way of any service being done (or iDrive being updated to 8.5)? Do I not need to be worried about the dealer having full access to whatever my info is that is contained within the car's computer?

2. Do you log in with your BMW ID in loaner vehicles? If so, is it easy to delete the profile fully when returning the loaner? Don't want any easy access after the fact.

3. Any sense trying to not have miles moving the car to and from service hit my lease allotment miles? It's probably 50 miles in total round trip so not really a big deal, but definitely miles I am incurring only because of a faulty airbag. Plus there are additional service visits to come, I assume as other remedies for other matters become available.

4. Anything else to consider / be aware of when dealing with service and loaners?

Thanks!

Personally, I wouldn’t make any extra trips to the dealer. If you’re that far away, I would wait until a service is needed such as an oil change and let them do all the updates at that point.

Got it. But at some point it will have to go to the dealer, so I'm curious about insights on the questions still. Thank you.

No on question 1 question 2 , not necessary question 3 don’t go any more than you have to . Question 4look for any damage on the car always show someone before you’re leaving like major scratches something tore up talk to a service representative before leaving.

1. Don't use Valet mode
2. You can if you want but you don't gain a lot from doing so. I always add my phone and make sure to delete it when I turn it back.
3. Not possible to do that.
4. Most dealers will ask you to return the loaner with the same amount of fuel as when you got it or else they can charge you for it so watch that. If you don't want your car washed let them know. I print out sheets and put a few in the vehicle as well as making sure it is on my service sheet.

Thanks for this. On the last part of 4 (“I print out sheets and put a few in the vehicle as well as making sure it is on my service sheet.”) not sure I follow. What do you mean? What sheets are you printing out and what’s the service sheet?

Thank you

I think he means he prints out pieces of a paper that say “don’t wash my car” and leaves them in the vehicle

1. No point doing so
2. It depends. Remote service are disabled for loaners as identified as fleet vehicle. However if you get a similar model with your car, seat memory and a few setting do transfer over. So I only do it if I get a X5 as loaner. You can always delete but you may forget.
3. Not really - you could try but not likely they can offer much
4. You should reserve a loaner when booking appointment, otherwise you might not get one as they won’t reserve one for you. It is more and more likely to get an EV as loaner iX or i4 as BMW push huge inventory to dealers recently and a few dealer just commissioned a whole lot of them to loaner fleet.

As clarified by E91toG05 , I print out the attached and put one on the dash and one of the passenger seat. By the service sheet I mean the paper that is printed for the technician describing the problem. In other words I let my SA know not to wash it and he notes it on the service order.

Seat memory is not stored in the cloud, only in the local stored profile. Different models and the same models can have different seating options.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification (and the PDF). Since I'm in a lease, I think I'll let them do the washing if they are inclined to do so. I haven't done ceramic treatment or anything special.
