I never test drive cars . I just go in and say I want that car and when they asked, would you like to drive it I say no I’ll take it for a 10,000 mile test drive if I like it I’ll keep it there’s not been very many to pass the 10 miles I say this to people some people gamble some people buy cars. No real reason and I switch brands from Range Rover to Toyota to Lexus to BMW. I just switch it up.

Maybe you should consider starting a car-test blog/magazine.

I traded my 2022 45e in for a 2024 40i. I've owned 40i and 50i X5s in the past (plus previous generation 35, etc)

I love playing with the latest and didn't like the electric only power of the 45e or the luxury seats, so took a shot at the new 40i.

My 2024 is an Alpine White M-Sport with Coffee Sensafin interior.

Likes

1. Sensafin has really surprised me. I really like it, first time I have had it and I do not miss leather.
2. Glad to have the HK back, like it better than the base system I had from the pandemic even with mods done
3. Parts of the external refresh look nice, the black on the front is iffy and maybe a little too Kia like. Either way, many positive comments from others on the look
4. Prefer the overall drive of the 40i. It is obviously lighter than the 45e but I prefer this suspension over the 45e air suspension.
5. Voice recognition is very good.
6. Seats, love the base sport seats. For me much nicer than the luxury seats in comfort.

Dislikes/Issues

1. iDrive 8. Hate it. I fiddle with the A/C fan speed and it is a pain. Even changing the temp requires a pretty exact press which is hard while driving, especially on bumpy roads. Voice recognition is good - but I do not talk to my car when I have passenger(s). Radio presets up/down on the steering wheel do not always work.
2. Stop/Start. Terrible since it impacts the A/C. It has been around 90 here the last few days and the A/C is not as powerful when the engine stops (not an issue with the 45e). Also the stop/start shudders when the car is sitting still.
3. Engine updates. Engine has a bit of a raspy sound when just started in the morning. It is fine once warmed up, but not what I am used to with BMW engines.

Curious on other thoughts. I may switch sometime to a 50e just because of the start/stop issues.
I got the 50e precisely because of those cons; it is way better than the i40.. Unfortunately some of the 50e's have a refrigerant valve problem and are stuck at service centers all over the country. Maybe an iX is the solution?

Nice. I hear you, everyone spends money on something. If cars are your thing and you have the dough to burn, why not? And again, it benefits guys like me!

I have a new 760i and completely agree about the Stop/Start. For me, it nearly ruins an otherwise exceptional car. Ugh.

There's another customer at the dealership I frequent who always wanted on a list to have first crack at my latest X6M when I turned it in. I think he's had a couple of my "gently used" trucks.

I was lined up to get a guys 2020 M550. About 10k miles on it. Individual paint, trim, and upholstery. But he decided to keep it when it was too late for the dealer to get him a 2023 build. Real bummer for me. All is well that ends well. I found another with all the options I wanted, individual paint color, and under 25k miles. But I was super bummed out when the dealer broke the news they weren’t getting the first one. If I ever see it show up on their site, I’m not beyond looking into a swap… just don’t tell my wife. Haha

We should definitely start a club! I also change my cars way too frequently. Just traded in my 760 and picked up an LCI today. 760 is too much tech and is a big boat! after honeymoon phase ended, I missed simplicity of X5

I’m another guy in need of an intervention. I’ve purchased 20 vehicles since I retired in 2001 three of which are still in the garage. Twelve were new and the rest had 10–15k miles on them. At least six were purchased sight unseen. Four were my wife's. She won’t let go of her 2014 A5 cabriolet at 26,250 miles.
Lately I’ve had my eye on a ‘23 X5 M50i. Certified and about 8,000 miles on it. The wife will not let go of the checkbook….God bless her. The intervention may have begun. She wants a master bathroom remodel. The faucet, shower and toilet still work just fine. I don’t get it!

Y’all are making me feel better. I’ve bought 8 cars in 7 years. Gotta chill now. Second baby and getting more focused on the house.

Such a great summary. I’m new to the Porsche macan 23 in GTS format and was pleasantly surprised it retains full AC even when auto stop is active and the engine moved to standby. I’m happy to keep auto stop on now. BMW should definitely take a leaf from this book.

Funny story. I've used the same dealership for the most part and regardless of how much business I have given them, they are now a pain in the ass to work with. Every deal is a battle. I am leaving them because of that.

Buy. Leases are very tough to get out of and the losses are typically larger. I have spreadsheets that compare all of the options, but dealing in cash usually in the best.

I do all cash deals now. No payments. In the early days I did financing and it really depended on the deal.

I know I am fortunate to have this as a hobby.

But 20 X5’s? X5 are just general SUVs. That is what is confusing me. I know many people who are car enthusiasts. But X5 40i?

Another guilty party here. 15 cars in under 10 years.

It doesn't help that Arizona enables this by not having sales tax on private party purchases. Literally encourages me to swap cars more often - as the only thing you really pay for is depreciation. Makes it easier to sell cars here as well (I only have really traded in 1 car in my life). Keeps life interesting switching things up, and I wouldn't ask for it any other way. My only regret? Keeping some cars for a bit too long ...

I've made a bit of money on some cars as a cherry on top (most have lost). Have tried many porsches, audis, lambos and a ferrari in last decade.

As my motto goes ... 'So many cars ... so little time'.

Overall I'm on my 23rd car. Trying to get to 100 before 80 years old (tough ask!) See if that happens.
