Clip under hood from battery
Hello everyone, I have a new X5M and I noticed a bunch of wires coming off the positive terminal under the hood. One of which has a clip with a cover on it. Can someone help me with understanding what this is for ? I was thinking maybe to charge the vehicle.
Thanks |

Looks like a trickle charger. It has a 7.5 Amp fuse goes to positive terminal; the freestanding end seems to be the quick release connector to the main charging unit; the other cable goes to the ground terminal?

Can you follow where the rest of that wire loom goes that has the yellow wire in it? Check your window sticker and also especially your buyers order and finance paperwork. There may have been a dealer installed option such as a vehicle tracker or something else.

I wonder if it’s a new version of the old main battery switch that is used to keep the battery from discharging as it makes its way from Dinglefing Germany to the VPC center where they are supposed to remove and return it to BMW.
This is the old main battery switch from the E chassis days. It even had a code number that would show up on the build sheet (S818A):

wonder why it has 3 wires? I would trace it and see where it is going. Definitely something the dealer did.

That loom looks like it's headed toward the front of the vehicle, not up toward the battery in the cowl. That's why I would trace it and find out what it terminates to.

I believe you are correct. Likely they have one harness for multiple vehicles.

Could it be some crappy dealer ad-on? We once purchased a car that was wired for a starter kill of some sort - if you chose not to buy it, they just left it in the car.

They just informed me it’s for the block heater located in the front grill somewhere. We live in Canada and for people who park outside would use this connection. But doesn’t explain the extra connector under the hood
**Update** I was misinformed, this is actually a Defa charging cable which has an inlet in the front grill passenger side l, they do not have a block heater for that engine. |
