Noise in steering column
I have a little squeaking sound in the steering column. It sounds like it is in the steering column just behind the steering wheel. This is a 2022X5 X-drive 40i. It has 13,000 miles on it.

At about 10K miles, my 22MY 45e developed a groaning sound when the steering wheel extended during start up. The dealer lubricated the steering column and it has been fine (so far).

Does it only happen when turning at low speeds after the car warms up? Mine does this and is at the dealer for diagnosis. Consensus around here is that a rack replacement is the fix.

My 2022 X6 does it since day 1. Dealership tried to repair it last month when I took it in for oil change. The sound is still there. I'll get it look at again in a few weeks. It is light squeek while turning the wheels that comes on after the car has been driven for 10-15 minutes.

Just got call from dealer - they replaced the steering rack. Had to get special approval from BMW. Pick it up later will report back. My symptoms were exact same as X6ix GTA.

Had the same 2022 G05 40d when the column was expanding itself to my memorised setting.
I've sprayed some WD-40 High Performance White Lithium Grease Spray on the threaded elements of the steering column and the center piece and the problem gone imidietally. It's just a metal part rubbing off another metal part. Grease it |

So we are talking about a few different things here. One of them is the issue of a squealing/squeak noise at low speeds when car is warmed up. Also you can feel when turning. This is not fixed by grease - it was a bad batch of steering assemblies and is fixed by dealer replacing the entire rack. Just got back from my repair and after drive it seems to be silent.

Hi all,
I have the squeaking noise in my 22 X5 as well. only when the car runs for like 10 mins does it begin to squeak. ANY movement of the steering wheel produces the sound. The dealer told me it was bushings in the steering column and that it is "normal", so they didn't pursue any further. I am looking for others that had the same issue or a TSB that I can use the escalate to management there and press the issue. I have never heard of a squeaking steering column being "normal" the TSB posted in this thread seems to be a tie rod issue vs what I am hearing coming from the steering column inside, so maybe we have a few different steering noise issues within the same thread. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!! |

Mine was a squeaking noise when turning at low speeds after car was warmed up (10-15 min after starting). You could also kind of “feel” the squeak through the wheel when turning - slight vibration. The repairs I listed seem to have fixed it. I need to do a long drive to confirm will do so this weekend.

I just got my vehicle back today. It took the dealer 1 week to complete the job. Complete silence now - I've been tolerating the issue for 8+ months... so happy it's fixed.
If it helps anyone, they replaced all of the parts below and also did a 4 wheel alignment. Apparently the PUMA cost was about $6,400. 32-10-5-a74-956 32-10-5-a60-a66 32-10-5-a60-a65 33-30-6-787-062 33-30-6-778-609 33-30-6-874-090 33-30-6-874-239 31-10-6-890-194 |

Ha! I too had been living with this noise for over one year and it is so nice to have it fixed - I was just too lazy to deal with it before now. I think I got lucky because it only took the dealer a few days to fix - brought it in Friday morning and it was done by Monday afternoon. Was pleasantly surprised they had all of the parts available without delay.
