Reliability of 19 X5 50I
Hi I am looking to purchasing a non warrantied 50i 2019 Msport. How is the reliability on this engine out of warranty. Please share any feedback it would make my purchasing decision easier. Thanks

From my experience from the 7-Series forum, where the 50i is a very popular option, I can tell you that most of the known big issues were with the very first iteration of the N63 that had 408PS (N63B44O0) where the injectors would flood the cylinder with fuel leading to a catastrophic failure of the oil-film. With the LCI that had 449PS (N63B44O1) I saw a lot less failures. Keep in mind though that the G05 X5 50i has the N63B44M3 which is a slightly different iteration and I don't know the exact changes off hand. (See here for details.)
Now is it the most reliable engine? Certainly not. I can only speak from what I've seen on German car forums but at least the early iterations of the N63 engine seem to actually be some of the least reliable BMW engines (except for the holy N54, of course. ) to be honest. Injectors fail quite often when the engine racks up miles but especially the heat of the hot-V seems to be a big issue. There's a lot of reports of brittle plastic lines and other parts failing due to the temperatures. And generally there seems to be more N63's needing an oil refil between oil changes than there are who don't. You don't see that with the inline 6 engines. Hope others chime in as well as my experience is limited to the earlier versions but on the German Forum people asked quite often if the N63B44O2 is any better than the O1 but no one really knew since these engines are still comprataively young. The reliability concern was one of the main reasons that kept me from buying a 750i F01 and why I ended up with a 750d of all engines (3 turbochargers) in the end. And I even owned an N54 back then! It seems though that only with the first iteration catastrophic failures were more common whereas with the later revisions failures would rather be a nuisance than killing the engine outright. |

I’ve had two of them, a 2015 and a 2019. I put around 60,000 miles on the first one and 40,000 miles the 19. I never had any issues with the 50i engine but the 19 needed a new transfer case when I traded it in. That seems to be somewhat common and something to think about.
