I Like the Stock Exhaust Note!

So...

The OCD in me never roll down the windows. Why? Ask my Dr...

Bottom line, the madness cleared just recently and I decided to break the rules!

Now I have always suspected there is a subtle satisfying exhaust note on lift off at Sport/+ D2, D3 / S2, S3 but wasn't quite sure until I started driving with the windows rolled down...and oh boy, I came to love the mature stock rumble of this entire intake to exhaust system...

Sure it was more pronounced in the F90 but somehow this feels right, especially with fast shifts over 3000 RPM at Sport + D3/S3...

Loving this ride more every day...

Tunnels and wide underpasses with windows down will be your favorite places to drive...

I've always thought the X5MC had an amazing exhaust tone. I'm SO glad bmw didn't throw in those ridiculous making popcorn pops that most kids love these days. Nothing but a smooth exotic V8 tone to let you know this isnt your ordinary X5 but not sound like you are dragging a bunch of empty cans behind you when you let off the throttle either.

When I upgraded my exhaust i made sure i retain that same note but wanted to increase the volume of it. My Akra rear section paired with the Dinan midpipe is absolutely perfection for me. Not crazy loud but loud enough when you are in sport+ mode and aggressive with the throttle.

Can't mess with Trackhawks. Once they are modded those things could practically do wheelies and the sound they make is straight up scary. Everyone talks about how AMG's sounds amazing but I don't see it. Doesn't sound smooth at all and reminds me of a old unrefined american lumpy V8.

i just went to dinan midpipe and rear section exhaust. so "full dinan" if you will. it sounds good - a little louder but not the poppy snaps and burbles of let's say my old MPE exhaust on my f80 comp

I have had it for a week now and I like the sound. When I had a 2014 X6M I put an Akra exhaust on it. I do not really see any reason to change the stock exhaust on this car.

As I am sipping my coffee and trying to read a book this morning, an F90 passes buy at a low speed and makes all kinds of backfires at lift off / downshifts until it reaches a full stop...

That was horrible. Even embarrassing...

Yeah, stock exhaust works!

Had mine for almost a year now and I still think it’s a little too quiet, even with the windows down. Been told it sounds pretty good from the outside. I do lie the tone and coming from an F80 I am so happy to never have to hear those farts that the F generation has.

So finnaly pulled the trigger on secondary catless downpipes which hopefully will add a bit more volume and retain the tone.

Just crossed 1200 miles and got the break in service and I'm disappointed in the exhaust.

You're not the only one. Seriously why even make an M car sound this muted is beyond me. Wish I could sit at whatever meeting BMW had where some execs decided that the X5M should be the quietest M car they made. Further more, it's 2024 and the amount of tech in this car is astonishing, yet they can't figure out a way to make an exhaust that can be both quiet and loud? Really? It's either laziness or simply someone at BMW corporate is so out of touch with reality. Or maybe the issue is that unfortunately too many buyers of the X5M are buying the wrong car: Don't buy a race inspired, one of the fastest performance cars BMW makes and wanting it to sound like a 20K, 3L SUV.

I agree that the car is a little muted, but the X5M is designed to be a sports car packed into a SAV. I believe the goal may have been to make it fast and sporty, but not obnoxious. The people who gravitate to these cars may have children or work at jobs where they don't need to bring attention to themselves or set off car alarms in the office parking lot.

If you want something obnoxious get an M3 or M5.

I have catless downpipes on mine and the sound is insane, but sometimes to I do miss the subtler tone and less attention.

I do agree with your comment, and yes generally the X5M audience tends to be more mature. BUT why is it that Mercedes for example can still produce an S63/S65 or a GLS63 that can be BOTH civilized and turn into a much better sounding V8 when opening the valves?

Why can't BWM have an option to say, fully by-pass the silencers at the press of a button? I mean there's an option to change how hard the brakes work (Presumably for track use?) but the exhaust button is no where near the same as the one in say a GT350 or 911 GTS. Even better, why not offer an M-Performance titanium exhaust for the X5M like they used to or like Porsche or Audi does?

Anyway got my secondary downpipes on the way and hopefully that will keep me happy for a while and spare me from having to buy an 5-10K exhaust.

Fair points, but this is my first V8, aside from the 1990 Lexus LS 400 I purchased around 2007. This might also be my last gas-powered car. Given that they've discontinued the regular X5/X6M and only offer the Competition, I expected more from the exhaust. It should be the M5 equivalent in SAV form. However, I love everything else about the car. The technology is incredible, and in my opinion, the ride isn't as harsh as many people say. Do you have more information on your catless downpipes? What was involved, and how much did it cost?

My RS5 Sportback managed to achieve a good balance. The X6M is louder overall, but the RS5 had a nice sound at all times, not just when pushed hard.

Then why did the pre LCI X5 M50i sound better than our cars? It had crackles and pops, etc. in sport and sport+.
Just doesn't seem right.

I have never had any good exhaust on any of my cars that came stock. M5 was ok, X3MC was garbage.

Question:

Is there a difference in exhaust note between Sport and Sport Plus? I can't tell...if there is, it has to be subtle...

Car is 100% stock

Sport doesn’t produce burble/pops while sport+ does… it’s more noticeable if you make mods like catless 2ndaries and res delete
