Here's a better picture to give you a better idea. The tape is just temporary to test it out and since this morning the noise is gone.
Thanks for this! I started hearing the wind noise recently, and after taping over that gap, it went away. I’ll make an appointment with my dealer to have the seal replaced per the SIB.

After reading this, I went to check on my 23 45e.. I see that gap there too. It's crazy to me how this is still an issue after all these years being in production. It's a simple fix where the seal is cut half an inch too short.

I do hear some wind noises at highway speed. BMW needs to get on top of these little QC issue.

You are right! I was always wondering why that seal running across the tilting part of the sunroof had a gap on the driver's side, every time I wash the car. This morning I closed the gap with a piece of tape and the noise went away. This confirms that the wind noise is coming from there. I'll mention this at my next service.

So for anyone suffering from wind noise appearing to come from the driver side window or door, check that seal for any gaps first.
We never use the sunroof in our 2019 and didn't have an issue until I just had the windshield replaced. Suddenly we had a lot of wind noise above 45mph. When I washed the car last weekend I noticed the gaps in the sunroof seals opened up much wider than they were. I remembered reading this post and put painters tape over the gaps and viola, wind noise gone. I'm thinking they must've opened the sunroof while replacing the windshield and caused the seals to shift.

Edit: dealer replaced the seal several months ago, problem fixed.

I have this same issue. Noticed increased wind noise in my MY22 about 2 months ago, and found the gap in the sunroof seal mentioned here. Manually sliding the seal from one side to the other changes the amount of noise in different parts of the cabin, so I’m confident this is the cause. Does anyone have a picture of what a properly installed seal looks like? I have a service appointment coming up and given the SIB doesn’t cover newer model years explicitly, I want to see if it’s an obvious difference that can be spotted by looking at other cars on the lot.

When I showed the tech at my dealer the rubber seal, just by looking at it he said something isn’t right and had it replaced right away. I’m certain if there’s a gap they will be able to tell right away. I will try to take a picture after work for you with the new seal installed.

FWIW, wind noise along with drag is one reason manufacturers want to consider cameras and video screens rather than those mirrors sitting out there that increase drag, add complexity because you may need to heat them, and, are harder to get a slippery surface.

The DOT in the USA so far, has rejected any use of cameras versus the required mirror, but that may eventually change. Just like it too them years to approve the anti-dazzle headlights that have been readily available in other parts of the world.

I’ve done the same, open the roof to vent position and pulled the seal over to the drivers side and now I don’t hear the whistle sound, only the passenger does If we have a long trip I put a square of tape over the hole and that get’s rid of it completely on both sides.

Can’t be bothered to have it fixed as this car is going soon as I’ll be getting an LCI. I must say though, it really irritated me for months until I discovered this thread and found the gap in the roof seal.

I just got mine done yesterday. This is the passenger side. The front of the vehicle is to the right side of the photo. There used to be a gap that I could fit my index finger in.

Yes, it is. Now the noise is completely gone. No more painters tape.

Good to hear, yet it looks like there is still a gap there?

It does, I guess. But compared to the gap before it was fixed, that's nothing. And there isn't any wind noise.

Wandered over here from the X7 side. My 2020 X7 does exactly what is described here. Is your picture how the seal looks on both sides? I can slide mine back and forth...it seems to be about a half in lch too small. I just ordered 54-10-7-493-155 and will replace it myself.

Why not just have the dealer fix it for you since it's already a known issue covered by warranty.

Because it's literally a 5 minute job and involves a $50 part. Beats killing most of a morning at the dealer.

I picked up my 2023 X5 45e back in September. It developed the wind noise about a month ago. Took it the dealer and they replaced Gasket, Glass Cover and Set Seal for Glass. The also used 6 x Screw Glass Panel. The sound is gone. The diagnosed the problem using painters tape.

Easy solution - take it to the dealer. As soon as I brought mine in, the service person said 'yeah we've seen a lot of those'. Mechanic took the car for a test drive just to rule out any other possible causes that would need to be addressed. Ordered replacement seal for roof for me, appt. on Jan 16th to install.
The notes from the mechanic were:
"Seals are too short. Sunroof seals have shrunk and need to be replaced".

I didn't know these could shrink....but whatever, as long as they fix it.
