BMW vehicles have an iconic red / orange interior glow at night which dates back to the 1970s. There is no doubt this is hue pleasing to the eye, but why did BMW stick with the color orange after all these years? There is science behind the reasoning for this choice that can be easier explained by learning how the human eyes work in dark environments.

The human eye has two types of photoreceptors located in the retina which receive light, the rods and cones. Rods are responsible for low light vision and the cones are responsible for high light vision. The rods are extremely sensitive to light, more than 1,000 more sensitive to light than the cones.

Longer wavelength colors such as red / orange, have the least amount of impact on our night vision. This capability allows our eyes to focus on red / orange lighting and then back to dark, dim light without loss of focus on objects thus preserving our night vision.
Swear to God, Auricom. Love your posts. See though that you're in DC....so, DOD or CIA?

Gotta be a DOD contractor, or DOD, with a comment like that

Can neither confirm nor deny, haha jk and I served about 3 decades ago. Just a long-time Bimmer enthusiast.

I do too now, but I have to say when I first got my X5 I was pretty skeptical about it and was considering turning it off.

Then when I spent a few hours configuring the X5 the way I wanted I started experimenting with ambient lighting and eventually I settled on orange with brightness dimmed at night and now I really like the ambience that it creates.

I wish I could pick more colors without having to code it. Apparently the OS is the issue and only allows a few slows of colors to pick.

for that?
It's not complicated at all, you just need a compatible OBD adapter and then download BimmerCode and you have access to around 15 more colors plus lots of other small changes you can make though coding

I love it! Not distracting at all! I wish I could make it brighter! The lack of choices in color is a bummer but still happy with it!

For us, the main reason to get the car...

Well, not really of course, BUT for us it's a big part of the luxurious car feeling, believe it or not.

Missed it since our last X5, and having had another car between, a Volvo, - that car was dark...VERY DARK inside and kind of made us sad. (Can't understand what they are thinking by including just a weak roof-LED inside the cabin.)

I even double checked with the seller if this ambient light was std or optional these days, and made sure we had it.

I always have the ambient light on like 80-100% power and often in blue.

I tell the wife that I have no problem with her using purple, but that orange and blue are the default colors, and she needs to change it back to one of those colors when she gets home. You want to know how many times she’s done that? Yeah, you know the answer.

Different ambient lights on dash will blink when you receive an incoming phone call.
