Ambient Lighting in the 2021 X5

Just ordered an X5. Didn't realize it came with multicolor ambient light in the cabin. What are your experiences with this? Do you use it? Is it distracting at night? Any color better for outside visibility?

I use it. You can have it auto dim at night as well as set the brightness level. I’ve got it set at about half level and it’s not distracting at all. I don’t see it during the day, just at night. You can turn it off in the settings if you don’t like it.

Since my little boys love it so much I have it on max setting even at night, it is not distracting for me at all.

Downside is they want different colors all the time

Coolest thing is it blinks on the door when it’s open to alert on coming traffic after parking.

I felt that the ambient lighting isnt anymore distracting than having to 12" displays staring you in the face with all its lights, texts, and graphics. I think it adds an ambiance that's sorely been lacking from most regular cars and its a very welcome and warm addition. But safety is always paramount and you can disable it if you think its too much.

Classic BMW orange is also the perfect color for night time:

BMW vehicles have an iconic red / orange interior glow at night which dates back to the 1970s. There is no doubt this is hue pleasing to the eye, but why did BMW stick with the color orange after all these years? There is science behind the reasoning for this choice that can be easier explained by learning how the human eyes work in dark environments.

The human eye has two types of photoreceptors located in the retina which receive light, the rods and cones. Rods are responsible for low light vision and the cones are responsible for high light vision. The rods are extremely sensitive to light, more than 1,000 more sensitive to light than the cones.

Longer wavelength colors such as red / orange, have the least amount of impact on our night vision. This capability allows our eyes to focus on red / orange lighting and then back to dark, dim light without loss of focus on objects thus preserving our night vision.

Initially didn't think much or care for it, but have come to like it. Adds a nice touch to the cabin at night. And truthfully looks pretty cool. I have the B&W system which also gets lights in the speakers. Set it to your liking and forget it. Orange is my preferred color, dimmed down but not distracting.

That makes sense. I'll look forward to experimenting when I get mine, hopefully in a couple of weeks. Wonder if it will matter that I have a red/green color issue.

A bit off subject..
I have sandstone interior with a black exterior. While blue lighting is not my favorite choice, I think the subtle blue with the light gray - "sandstone" interior at night gives the vehicle a very classy look.

I coded red as an option because I like the color red, but it isn't as classy.

I had purple in my wife's G30, but when I got my 45e, I changed it to orange cuz it complemented the aluminum tetragon trim and coffee leather interior so well. When I drive her G30 the LEDs are orange since my driver profile transfers over.

Yes indeed. This is why US Navy ships use red lights at night. Makes perfect sense. The Navy also does this to minimize ship's visibility to the enemy at night. Here's a Navy sailor's video of darken ship at night.

Agree - it's a tiny thing but makes a difference to the owner - a few more smiles when driving and/or when you have passengers.
