X5 M Competition tire question
Wanting to put all-season tires on my X5MC, but apparently none exist in the standard OEM format.
Considering 3 options: 1) Read in another thread that some were considering putting the 295/35/21 tire size on all 4 corners. 2) I can get Pirelli Scorpion Zero A/S in the 295/35/21 for front axle and Pirelli P Zero A/S in the 315/30/22 for rear axle... all have same speed/load/tread ratings 3) Suck it up and just use winter tires Has anyone tried option 1 or 2, or is that highly discouraged because it might cause issues in the car? other thoughts? |

Is option 1 intended to use the factory 21" wheels (808m), or at least wheels with the same offsets? If so, no problem - it's a factory fit option.
Option 2 will likely be shot down by most. It's never a good idea to mix different tire models front/rear, and Scorpion Zeros and P Zeros are not terribly similar except in name. Would it work for commuter-style (non-performance) driving? Probably. Would the handling be predictable? Maybe not. I'm leaning towards Option 3 myself. Conventional wisdom would say to put a narrower winter tire on (square 21's, for example). I'm strongly considering using OEM staggered sizes on the factory wheels for winter, and getting a new separate set for summer. Remember - winter tires are as much about temperature as snow. We had our first cool (upper 40s) weekend of the year this week in Kansas, and the PS4S's on our M2 were clearly down on grip already. |

I put Continental dws 06+ on ours, did one size taller than oem on stock competition wheels. Ride is better and suits my wife’s needs, it is also lowered with no rubbing. 295/40/21 front and 315/35/22 rear

Is the all season good enough for Chicago winters? Does the extra height make the ride quality softer?

Ride is slightly less harsh. I think so, they are definitely not dedicated snow tires but depending on how much you drive probably they will probably be good. We have other options if the weather is really bad but plan to drive this most of the time. We live in Michigan and get decent snow.

Just something I decided to try, I work in the car industry and enjoy modification. Speedo is now dead on at 80. Spare could be an issue if ran for an extended length of time but doubt it would cause any issue to reach a destination. No safety concerns for me at all.

Im starting to lean on getting one larger aspect ratio. It appears the Pirelli Scorpion winters also come in the 295/40ZR21 and 315/35ZR22. I assume the softness of winter plus the thicker tire wall will make it comfortable. But is that too much? Would winter tires already soften the ride a bit? Would it void the drivetrain warranty?
