Radiator fan

Does anyone else’s radiator fan run for a long while after the car is turned off? Mine does it every time. I have a ‘21 F95.

So mine is doing it even in the cold after driving it in the softest settings.

"The conventional coolant pump is driven via a belt and cannot be used for cooling the exhaust turbocharger after the engine has shut down. For this reason there is an electric coolant pump, which works at a power of 20 W, for this separate cooling circuit. But also during engine operation the electric coolant pump is switched on taking into account the following factors:

• Coolant temperature at the engine outlet

• Engine oil temperature

• Injected fuel quantity.

Using these values the heat input into the engine is calculated. The run-on period of the electric coolant pump can last up to 30 min. To improve the cooling effect, the electric fan is activated and can run down for up to a max. of 11 minutes."

Thanks, sounds like nothing to worry about.

Nope, nothing you or passers by should worry about (I’ve had people stop me to tell me I left my car running).

I wonder if this feature is connected to AKKS codes ( active shutter). I had the shutter removed and later my radiator fan would no longer activate after shutdown. My tuner coded out the cel but now, despite no cel or drivetrain error, still no radiator fan.

Yup, normal and I have an F95 (2023). It shuts down after a few mins no matter the temps outside

Please be mindful of the battery wear due to the repetitive engine-shutdown cooling power requirements.

Our batteries have a life of 200-400 capacity cycles, meaning that our main ~100 Ah battery has a total 20 to 40 kAh total battery life output before serious degradation. Any output amps at any time count for the total battery life.

An average cooling run after shutdown (fan + pumps) may be in the 7 to 15 Ah range. If you do this once a day for three years (~1000 days), you will use 7 to 15 kAh of the total battery life - then add to this all the other engine-off battery drains (alarm, BMW server communications, memory modules, etc.)

To mitigate this problem I do the following: every time, upon returning home, I attach a C-TEK 8 Amp battery tender to extend the battery life - and it is also a 30 second procedure preparing me for future EV ownership... ☹️
